To this untutored taste the most beautiful horse seems to be a form which has suffered less radical alteration than the race-horse under the breeder's selective development of the animal.
Something of the same elasticity of constitution may be observed in the bodies of our pigeons as they have been affected by selection. Not only has the plumage been greatly altered by the breeder's art and in pursuance of his plans, but the form and proportions of the bones have coincidently and unintentionally been greatly changed.
Darwin was particularly impressed by the way mankind has dealt with the various species of domesticated animals, and he was the first naturalist to point out the correspondence between the breeder's method of "artificial selection," and the world-wide process of natural selection.
The readiness with which the proportions of the dog may, by the breeder's art, be made to vary, is probably due to the fact that the group to which this creature belongs is one of relatively modern institution. It has the plasticity which we note as a characteristic of many other newly-established forms.
With such a basis for the selective art as the variations of this insect afford, there seems no reason why it should not afford a good field for the work of the breeder's art. Recent Understanding as to the Rights of Animals; Nature of these Rights; their Origin in Sympathy. Early State of Sympathetic Emotions. Place of Statutes concerning Animal Rights. Present and Future of Animal Rights.
He also considered at length the results of the breeder's work with domesticated animals, and he showed for the first time that the latter have an evolutionary significance.
George stopped a dog in Sigmaringen and drew our attention to it. It suggested a cross between a codfish and a poodle. I would not like to be positive it was not a cross between a codfish and a poodle. Harris tried to photograph it, but it ran up a fence and disappeared through some bushes. I do not know what the German breeder's idea is; at present he retains his secret.
It has become in a way interwoven with his life to a degree found only in a few of our barnyard animals. Next after the pigeons and the pigs it has been most deeply impressed by the breeder's art. The wild species whence it sprang is a small creature, laying but few eggs and with but a slight tendency to accumulate fat.
Here's a standing invitation to take Easter dinner with us, or any other dinner, for that matter, if you ever come East. I am planning to sow about forty acres more alfalfa this year. A writer for the Breeder's Gazette visited us last summer, and he said some of our alfalfa was as good as any he had ever seen in California.
No occurrence of possible varietal characteristics obscures the result, and in this respect this hybrid stands out much more clearly than all those between garden-plants, where varietal marks nearly always play a most important part. From the breeder's point of view our hybrid Oenothera would be a distinct gain, were it not for the difficulty of its propagation.
