The ball of alien earth grew from a pinpoint to the size of an orange. They forgot time in the wonder which none had ever thought in his heart he would see on the screen. Raf knew that in control every second of this was being recorded as they began to establish a braking orbit, which with luck would bring them down on the surface of the new world. "Cities those must be cities!"
The effectiveness of the sun's attraction in slowing down the rotation of a planet through the braking action of the tides raised in the body of the planet while it is yet molten or plastic, varies inversely as the sixth power of the planet's distance. For Mercury this effectiveness is nearly three hundred times as great as it is for the earth, while for Venus it is only seven times as great.
"Fire braking rockets one half," ordered Strong. Tom relayed the order to Astro and made the necessary adjustments on the control panel. "Stern drive rockets out," ordered Strong. Once again Tom relayed the message to Astro and turned to the control board. "Cut all rockets!" ordered Strong sharply.
That you can have!" Nearing the first stop in their tour, Tom signaled ahead to Number Twelve to be taken aboard. He waited for the outer portal of the ship's air lock to be opened and then sent his tiny spacecraft into a shallow dive, applying his braking jets expertly to bring it to a dead stop inside the jet-boat deck of the converted space liner.
Every hundred yards or so, however, it would slow down a little, and its jumps, as it glanced back without turning by merely taking a high, flying leap and throwing its head aloft would look strangely retarded, as if it were jumping from a sitting posture or braking with its hind feet while bending its body backward.
"Yeah, but not because we're trying to save the ship." "Then why?" asked Tom. "He's afraid of losing a good unit!" Tom smiled and turned to the control board. "Energize the cooling pumps!" he bawled to Astro over the intercom. The slow whine of the pumps began to build to a shrieking pitch. "Pumps in operation, Tom," said Astro. "Cut in nose braking rockets," ordered Tom.
They had tried to ride on top of the cars of his train without paying fare, and he had thrown them all off, one by one, while the train was going. The fireman told me about it. Burrdock was taking me out to Track's End because he said it was a live town, and a good place for a boy to grow up in. He had first wanted me to join him in braking on the railroad, but I judged the work too hard for me.
But a moment later the braking rockets did flare briefly, yet still too long. The Chief was not only stopped, but drifting backwards toward the Platform. He evidently tried to turn, and he spun as dizzily as Joe had done. But after a moment he stopped almost. There were, then, two red-painted things in space, somewhat like giant water-spiders floating forlornly in emptiness.
Tom opened the valve again and felt the tug of the jets braking his acceleration. He drifted slower and slower, and realizing that he was close to the hull of the ship, he stretched his legs, striving to make contact. Seconds later he felt a heavy thump at the soles of his feet, and within the ship there was the muffled clank of metal boot weights hitting the metal skin of the hull.
