Experience proves to us every day that among such men you may find, not the worst parish priests, but the best. I wonder whether John Bonington, steward of the manor of Waltham, was one of those whom Knighton alludes to. Sometime during the year 1343 there had been a disastrous fire in the house of one Roger Andrew; the dwelling, with all that it contained, was burnt to the ground.

He showed me a Bonington water colour which he had picked up for a song. On enquiry as to the signification of a song as a unit of value, I learned that since eminent tenors and divas had sung into gramophones, the standard had appreciated. "My dear man," he laughed, in answer to my protest. "I can afford it."

After six years' hard riding and scant feeding, peradventure Richard Andrew would rather have had the hard cash than the poor brute, which by this time, probably, had died and gone to the dogs! A shudder of penitence and remorse had thrilled through John Bonington when the plague was stalking grimly up and down the land; and this is what we learn about him this and no more.

Mattock, "are not the least bit what you think them " "Oh, d' you know, I think they're rather nice!" broke in Aunt Charlotte close to the hydrangea. "You think so?" said Mrs. Mattock sharply. "I find they do nothing but grumble." "They don't grumble at me: they are delightful persons", and Lady Bonington gave Shelton a grim smile.

The Tate has a brilliant oil rendering of the Doges' Palace by Bonington. The many Venetian water-colours which he made with such rapidity and power are scattered. One at any rate is in the Louvre, a masterly drawing of the Colleoni statue. To enumerate the great artists who have painted in Venice would fill a book. Not all have been too successful; while some have borne false witness.

Among them are Reynolds, Hogarth, Gainsborough, Morland, Wilson, Fuseli, Zoffani, Blake, Opie, De Loutherbourg, Northcote, Harlow, Jackson, Bonington, Lawrence, &c. &c.; and, as many of the specimens are associated with pleasurable recollections, we will endeavour to notice a few of them, in succession with the works of the living Artists.

Portrait of the late James Perry, Esq. Lawrence. The likeness is striking, and the colouring that of a master hand. The "head and front" bear intellectuality in an eminent degree. Henry III. of France. Bonington. One of the lamented artist's most celebrated pictures.

A photograph hung in his bedroom at Holm Oaks of a group round the hall door; the Honourable Charlotte Penguin, Mrs. Dennant, Lady Bonington, Halidome, Mr. Dennant, and the stained-glass man all were there; and on the left-hand side, looking straight in front of her, Antonia.

But if Turner failed, as every artist must fail, to recapture all, his failures are always magnificent. There are, of course, also numbers of his Venetian water-colours. Where Turner lived when in Venice, I have not been able to discover; but I feel sure it was not at Danieli's, where Bonington was lodging on his memorable sojourn there about 1825. Turner was too frugal for that.

Among the more remarkable were those of Lady Eastnor, 1825; Lady King, daughter of Lord Byron, 1835; Countess Ribblesdale, etc. Her portraits of Fraser Tytler, John Girkin, and Bonington are in the National Portrait Gallery, London. In the South Kensington Gallery are her pictures of "Devotion St.
