Even in Sycamore Ridge the reporters appeared with exasperating regularity, and the papers were filled with diverting articles telling of the Barclays' social simplicity and rehashing old stories of John Barclay's boyhood.
With a flush of pleasure, the boys started off to carry out the orders; which had been given, by their commander, with the kind thought of sparing the lads the terrible sight of the battle ground. The short but desperate conflict through which they had passed seemed, to the young Barclays, almost like a dream.
It was now twelve o'clock the preparations having taken them three hours and they went to the cafe where they were to meet Colonel Tempe, to breakfast. He was already there, and they walked up to the table where he was sitting. "These seats are engaged," Colonel Tempe said, shortly. The Barclays sat down at the next table; and called, in a foreign accent, for two glasses of beer.
Gurney, the mother, a descendant of the Barclays of Ury, was a woman of much personal beauty, singularly intellectual for those times, making her home a place where literary and scientific people loved to gather. Elizabeth wellnigh idolized her mother, and used often to cry after going to bed, lest death should take away the precious parent.
There was no time for words, however; for Major Tempe's order came, sharp and decisive: "You the Barclays, you also the Duburgs, sling your arms, and go assist to drive in the cattle. Quick, lose no time. "You have done well. I am content with you, my boys."
The Barclays had reason to congratulate themselves that they had not longer deferred their preparations for escape; for when presenting themselves, as usual, that afternoon at the roll call, they were told that they must hold themselves in readiness to leave for one of the eastern fortresses, upon the following evening; as another large batch of prisoners, from Metz, was expected to arrive upon the following day.
"In another half hour it will be dusk. The Barclays have again volunteered to go in, and find out what we require. They will go on at once; and in an hour we will follow, and remain concealed, just outside the village, until they return. "Sergeant, you will go forward with them, and agree upon the place where we shall remain hid, until they join us.
And so with all of this hide-and-seek of souls, now peering from behind eyes and now far away patting one two three upon some distant base, with all these queer goings-on inside of people here in this strange world, it is no wonder that when the angels brought Jeanette to the Barclays, they left her much to learn and many things to study about. So she had to ask questions.
I shall never forget the kindness I received from two Miss Barclays, Quaker ladies, and a Miss Fotheringham, who, on hearing of my illness, came and sat up alternate nights with me, as if I had been their sister.
The Barclays had come out in plain clothes, bringing their uniform in the balloon for, in the event of the balloon having fallen among the Germans, it was of course essential that they should be able to get off, unobserved.
