The ceiling was broken by a series of beams radiating unevenly from one annular space, in all directions, and with no apparent design. The furniture was rattan and plush, upholstered and plain, and was crowded together with a few writing tables scattered here and there. It was a discordant orgie of decorative effects and the result was unutterably depressing.

Should a subsidence of the same kind be repeated, the corals would again grow up in a wall, from all the solid parts of the resunken reef, and, therefore, not from within the sandy shores of the lagoon; and the inner part of the new annular reef would, from being as before checked in its upward growth, be of less height than the exterior parts, and therefore would not reach the surface of the lagoon.

Obstructing projections on the inside periphery of the annular tank assist the water to carry the latter along with it in its circular motion. For small steam motors, particularly for agricultural and domestic purposes, the turbine principle is destined to render services of the utmost importance.

An annular eclipse, on the other hand, takes place when the moon is indeed centrally interposed, but falls short of the apparent size required for the entire concealment of the solar disc, which consequently remains visible as a bright ring or annulus, even when the obscuration is at its height. In a total eclipse, on the contrary, the sun completely disappears behind the dark body of the moon.

Motions of this kind, through such vast regions of space, must be long in producing any change sensible to the inhabitants of our planet, and it is not easy to grasp their general character; but grounds have nevertheless been found for supposing that not only our sun, but the other suns of the system pursue a wavy course round the ring FROM WEST TO EAST, crossing and recrossing the middle of the annular circle.

The isle was like the rim of a great vessel sunken in the waters; it was like the embankment of an annular railway grown upon with wood: so slender it seemed amidst the outrageous breakers, so frail and pretty, he would scarce have wondered to see it sink and disappear without a sound, and the waves close smoothly over its descent.

In the Chagos group there are annular reefs, entirely submerged, which have the same structure as the submerged and defined portions just described.

F, annular conical opening or discharge pipe, the size of which is regulated by the movement of the tube or cylinder B. G, hand wheel for actuating the cylinder B. H, opening, in connection with the atmosphere, intervening between discharge pipe F and the receiving pipe through which the water is forced. I, tube through which the water passes to the boiler.

The operation of the engine is as follows: Each piston as it ascends draws into the annular space under it a supply of gas and air in proportion regulated by the cocks or valves, and as it descends it forces this charge into the interior of the revolving valve and its casing, and into the reservoir which communicates therewith.

Gould, then director of the National Observatory of the Argentine Republic at Cordoba, caught a glimpse of it very low in the west; and on the following evening, Mr. Eddie, at Graham's Town, discovered a faint nucleus, of a straw-coloured tinge, about the size of the annular nebula in Lyra. Its condensation, however, was very imperfect, and the whole apparition showed an exceedingly filmy texture.
