Aulius Gellius, in connection with this passage in De Amicitia, tells the following story of Chilo, who was on some of the lists of the seven wise men. incur absolute dishonor. There is a point up to which a concession made to friendship is venial. Virtue, which has the sincere regard of the people as its consequence, is by no means to be sacrificed to friendship.
It is supposed to have consisted at least of two books, of which we have but the proem of the first, and a small portion of the second. In his beautiful compositions, De Senectute and De Amicitiâ, Cato the censor and Lælius are respectively introduced, delivering their sentiments on those subjects.
Thirdly, and principally, all these exclusives abhorred the two sitting members, and "idem nolle idem velle de republica, ea firma amicitia est;" that is, congeniality in politics pieces porcelain and crockery together better than the best diamond cement. The sturdy Richard Avenel, who valued himself on American independence, held these ladies and gentlemen in an awe that was truly Brahminical.
On the contrary, there is no other language in which it is so hard to bury thought or to conceal its absence by superfluous verbiage. I have used Beier's edition of the De Amicitia, adhering to it in the very few cases in which other good editions have a different reading. There are no instances in which the various readings involve any considerable diversity of meaning.
No old age can be so decrepid in a man who has passed his life in honour, but it must be venerable, especially to his children, whose soul he must have trained up to their duty by reason, not by necessity and the need they have of him, nor by harshness and compulsion: "Et errat longe mea quidem sententia Qui imperium credat esse gravius, aut stabilius, Vi quod fit, quam illud, quod amicitia adjungitur."
Tiberius in a letter to him saith, Haec pro amicitia nostra non occultavi; and the whole senate dedicated an altar to Friendship, as to a goddess, in respect of the great dearness of friendship, between them two. The like, or more, was between Septimius Severus and Plautianus.
Between you and me there has been, I think, as much as possible between any two people, the 'idem velle, idem nolle et idem sentire de republica, and in consequence the 'firma amicitia. God bless you, and believe me always, Yours most sincerely and faithfully, C. C. G. From Lord Brougham I really begin to feel anxious about the peace of Europe, and not without some alarm as to our own position.
Oh, it is pleasant, as it is rare, to find the same arm linked in yours at forty, which at thirteen helped it to turn over the Cicero De Amicitia, or some tale of Antique Friendship, which the young heart even then was burning to anticipate! Co-Grecian with S. was Th , who has since executed with ability various diplomatic functions at the Northern courts.
He tells them that he knew their fathers, and that "he believes they are still alive that, though they have gone from this earth, they are still leading that life which can only be considered worthy of the name." The De Amicitia is called Lælius.
On the last page of the "De Amicitia:" "March 5, 1836. Yesterday Lord Auckland arrived at Government House, and was sworn in." Beneath an idyl of Moschus, of all places in the world, Macaulay notes the fact of Peel being First Lord of the Treasury; and he finds space, between two quotations in Athenaeus, to commemorate a Ministerial majority of 29 on the Second Reading of the Irish Church Bill.
