Somewhere about 1810 and 1812 I must have met Lamb repeatedly at the Courier Office in the Strand; that is, at Coleridge's, to whom, as an intimate friend, Mr. But in these miscellaneous gatherings, Lamb said little, except when an opening arose for a pun.
For many years the Walters had been printers to the custom house, a post of considerable profit. In 1810 the newspaper discovered and exposed corrupt practices in the Navy Department, practices which were subsequently condemned by an investigating commission. The administration deprived the fearless editor of the custom house business.
The principal rival of the Astor Fur Trading Company was the Northwest Company. Astor tried to persuade the company to join him in his new venture. He made this demonstration before the members of the Royal Institution in 1810. But the practical utility of such a light for illuminating purposes was still a thing of the future.
