The original religion of Arya originated in Bactria. From thence, before the time of Zoroaster, it was brought over, with the great migration of the people, to the land of the seven rivers, which they conquered, and which stretched from the Indus to the Hesidrus.
Zarathustra, the mystery of evil, weighed heavily on them and on their great prophet, Zoroaster splendour of gold, as I am told his name signifies who lived, no man knows clearly when or clearly where, but who lived and lives for ever, for his works follow him. Our knowledge of the religion of the ancient Persians is principally derived from the Zendavesta, or sacred books of that people. Zoroaster was the founder of their religion, or rather the reformer of the religion which preceded him.
