"The same kindly spirit, the same warm charity and fervor of devotion which breathes in every line of that admirable book, 'Home Influence, will be found adorning and inspiring 'The Mother's Recompense." Each of these, however, may by itself become the subject-matter of a literary essay, provided the writer's own moods and appreciations are included; otherwise it is a topic for sociology, history, or topography, not for literature. By fate in a story I mean the writer's feeling for causality.
Part III. contains an account of seven exceptional cases of diseased action which have come under the writer's observation; a few more from another physician, and ends with this sentence: "The preceding physiological and pathological data naturally open the way to a consideration of the co-education of the sexes." The italics, as before, are ours.
Then, shaking off the quiescence of mind which his brooding had engendered, he applied his faculties to the consideration of a situation which at first sight seemed fantastic as a nightmare. The letter was not more remarkable than its despatch after the writer's death, but the summons to Cornwall was not in itself surprising.
When one reads these stories, one does not feel as if it were the writer's vocation to be a story-teller, but as if he were using the story as a philosophical toy.
