Delbrueck did not see that there was a real communication between the caves along the so-called cryptoporticus. There is a window-like hole, now walled up, in the east cave at the top, and it opened out upon the second story of the cryptoporticus, as Marucchi saw. So there was an unseen means of getting from one cave to the other.

Once having his feet on something approaching firm ground, he gazed about through the window-like eye of the helmet until he got his bearings. Then he began to walk heavily along the bottom of the harbor, over sand and rocks. It was a strange walk that he took, half stumbling, slowly and cumbersomely groping his way like a queer under-water animal.

Immediately a shaggy head protruded through the window-like opening, a pair of bright eyes passed over the other visitors and rested upon Leo, with a look which might well be interpreted as one of affection; and a rough nose rubbed up against the boy's arm, this being Winkle's way of expressing delight at seeing his master.

Its sides were latticed, with the exception of two small window-like openings on either side. These were hung with white linen, but the drapings had been put aside to admit the morning air. The soldier looked and the shock of recognition drew him a pace away from the stela. The head of a young girl, partly turned from him, was framed in the small window.

This screen of whitewashed toub was arranged to hide persons on the roof from those on the roof of the mosque; but window-like openings had been made in it, filled in with mashrabeyah work of lace-like pattern; an art brought to Africa long ago by the Moors, after perfecting it in Granada. And this roof was not the only one thus screened and latticed.

The dwellings, like those of the Aryks, consisted of a single story, with the door in the middle of the front, a window-like opening on each side of the same, roofed over with poles, covered with earth, leaves and grass, that were impervious to wind and storm. It seemed to the astonished whites that the entire population had gathered along the shore to receive them.

The sun, bidding good-bye to the day, gave back for an hour the splendour of the past. The three went up into the bell tower and looked down; upon the old garden of the monks, then away to the sheltering hills, with the far-off rampart of mountains. It was beautiful there, and the bells in their open, window-like arches, had the kindly beauty of age and experience.

Braver than the bravest, You sought honors at death's door; Could you not remember One who weeps at home Could you not remember me? Braver than the bravest, You sought honors more than love; Dear, I weep, yet I am not a coward; My heart weeps for thee My heart weeps when I remember thee! Sioux Love Song. The sky is blue overhead, peeping through window-like openings in a roof of green leaves.

The startled island had given forth its winged inhabitants. Other huge birds emerged and flew from the summit and disappeared like black specks toward the larger island. These were falcons which roosted in the Vedrá and lived upon the doves of Iviza and Formentera. The old sailor pointed out to Febrer certain window-like caves in the most sheer and inaccessible cliffs of the smaller island.

The space between the pillars is closed by a fixed vertical slab in which is a window-like aperture similar to that which gives access to Room F. All the stones in this doorway are ornamented with pit-marks. The rectangular room H has niches in its walls to the north, south, and west. Each niche is formed by a pair of uprights with a block laid across the top.
