We have seen but one strange sail since we left Bequir, and that at too great a distance to speak with. I think it probable Sir Horatio may be on his way to Naples, as he proposed to sail soon to join the Portuguese squadron, taking with him the Culloden, Alexander, and Goliath. The Zealous, with Swiftsure, and the frigates, were to be left to block up Alexandria, and distress the enemy.

He instantly made signals which prevented the other ships, the `Alexander, `Swiftsure, and `Leander, following, and getting on shore. They did their best to help off the `Culloden, but could not get her off, so stood on into the battle. Before even they opened their fire, five of the enemy's ships had struck.

And in the same program, as if to offset the argument for heavier and stronger ships, there were included the lighter and faster ships, Swiftsure and Triumph, displacing only 11,500 tons, but making 19 knots.

They did not fail to persevere. When Molson found that ox-teams were required to tow her up St Mary's Current, below Montreal, he ordered a better engine of thirty horse-power from Boulton and Watt in England, and put it into the Swiftsure in 1811.

We hear the Swiftsure, Sir W. Barkeley, is come in safe to the Nowre, after her being absent ever since the beginning of the fight, wherein she did not appear at all from beginning to end. 9th. The Court is divided about the Swiftsure and the Essex's being safe. And wagers and odds laid on both sides. Sir W. Coventry is come to town; so I to his chamber.

The Government accepted his resignation with regret, and appointed him to the command of the Swiftsure, with a special pension for his services in New South Wales of £500 a year; in 1801 he was promoted Rear-Admiral of the Blue, in 1804 Rear-Admiral of the White, in 1805 Rear-Admiral of the Red, in 1809 Vice-Admiral of the White, and on July 31st, 1810, Vice-Admiral of the Red.

The `Swiftsure' took her place, and soon made the Frenchman pay dear for what she had done. I heard of this afterwards.

The fire was then directed on Le Peuple Souverain, until she cut and dropped out of the line, totally dismasted and silenced. A Audacious. 1 Guerrier. B Bellerophon. 2 Conquérant. D Defence. 4 Aquilon. E Majestic. 5 Peuple Souverain. F Alexander. 6 Franklin. G Goliath. 7 L'Orient. L Leander. 8 Tonnant. M Minotaur. 9 Heureux. O Orion. 10 Mercure. S Swiftsure. 11 Guillaume Tell.

Those vessels of the English squadron which happened to be in rear were some leagues astern when the fight began, and it was so dark when they entered that extreme difficulty was experienced in getting in. She served, however, as a beacon to the Alexander and Swiftsure.

The last of the Swiftsure boats went by, long, long ago, and the later generations of New Netherlander know not the joys of journeying on the canal. Fortunately in the old Netherlands the water-highways are still ways for travel as well as for traffic.
