At a fashionable up-town kennel he found exactly what he wanted, in the shape of a Pekingese a playful, pedigreed pocket dog scarcely larger than his two fists. It was a creature to excite the admiration of any woman; its family tree was taller than that of a Spanish nobleman, and its name was Ying.

The phrase occurs in the memoir of Chang K'een, referred to in the next note. Through him, by B.C. 115, a regular intercourse was established between China and the thirty-six kingdoms or states of that quarter; see Mayers' Chinese Reader's Manual, p. 5. The memoir of Chang K'een, translated by Mr. Less is known of Kan Ying than of Chang K'een.

Dowager lady Chia with Pao-yue, Hsiang-yuen, Tai-yue and Pao-ch'ai sat at one table. Madame Wang took the girls, Ying Ch'un, and her sisters, and occupied one table. Old goody Liu took a seat at a table next to dowager lady Chia.

For a period this person resisted the efforts of those who would have questioned him, withdrawing their attention to the harmonious lights upon the river mist floating far below, but presently, being definitely called upon, he replied as follows: "Mih Ying, who was perhaps the greatest of his time, spent his whole life in painting green and yellow beetles in the act of concealing themselves beneath dead maple leaves upon the approach of day.

The season was the course of the first moon, and the school was shut up for the new year holidays; while in the inner chambers the girls had put by their needlework, and were all having a time of leisure, and hence it was that when Chia Huan too came over in search of distraction, he discovered Pao-ch'ai, Hsiang Ling, Ying Erh, the three of them, in the act of recreating themselves by playing at chess.

Yue Ch'uan took at once a seat on a small stool. Ying Erh, however, did not presume to seat herself; and though Hsi Jen was quick enough in moving a foot-stool for her, Ying Erh did not still venture to sit down. Ying Erh's arrival filled Pao-yue with intense delight.

"It's only right and proper that you should go and have your food at once and then return." Hearing this, Hsi Jen and her companions went off, leaving behind only two youthful servant-girls to answer the calls. Pao-yue watched Ying Erh make the nets.

The only thing is, you must form your society, without including me in the number; for I daren't be one of you." "If you daren't," Ying Ch'un smiled, "who can presume to do so?" "This is," suggested Pao-yue, "a legitimate and great purpose; and we should all exert our energies.

Hsi Jen saw very well that Ying Erh failed to attract his attention and she began to fear lest she felt uncomfortable; and when she further realised that Ying Erh herself would not take a seat, she drew her out of the room and repaired with her into the outer apartment, where they had a chat over their tea. But Pao-yue would not have anything to eat.

It was only the other day that I mentioned to your brother that: 'Wen Hsing too was young, and not fit to attend to everything that turns up, that Ying Erh could not alone do all the waiting, and that it was necessary to purchase another girl for your service." "If we buy one, we won't know what she's really like!" Pao-ch'ai demurred.
