I have received your letter, with the preceding statement, respecting our retreat from New-York Island, in September, 1776, and, in compliance with your request, I have to reply, that the relation made by Mr. Wakeman and Mr, Jennings corresponds with my recollection.

As to my own opinion of the management of the troops on leaving New-York, I then, and still suppose, as did General Chandler, that Colonel Burr's merits there as a young officer ought, and did, claim much attention, and whose official duties as an aid-de-camp on that memorable day justly claimed the thanks of the army and his country. Certificate from Isaac Jennings and Andrew Wakeman.

Ten thousand pounds had been offered to Sir George Wakeman, the queen's physician, who demanded fifteen thousand, as a reward for so great a service: his demand was complied with; and five thousand had been paid him by advance.

His wife leaned on the arm of his chair, watching his animated face fondly, as he recounted the adventures of the night. He pictured the scene vividly, and with a strong sense of humor. "And you don't say that Marie Wakeman is the same as ever?" she interrupted, with a flash of special interest. "Oh, William!" "She called me Billy." He laughed anew at the thought.

Stick to facts counsel will attend to the arguments. Go on." "Well, they both went over there that I saw." "Very good. Go on." "And they both kicked him I swear to it." "Mr. Wakeman, was Count Luigi, here, willing to join the Sons of Liberty last night?" "Yes, sir, he was. He did join, too, and drank a glass or two of whisky, like a man." "Was his brother willing to join?" "No, sir, he wasn't.

Jocelyn sat on a packing-case, a block of paper on her knee, writing a letter to a man who had left the camp to go up the line again. Another woman, a fellow worker, was arranging plates of cakes and biscuits on the counter, piling bowls ready to hand for the crowd of men who would come later, clamouring for tea. Private Wakeman stood in the middle of the hut and looked around him.

He and the others of his company had met in straight hand to hand fighting the proudest troops of Germany. By stabbing, lunging, battering with clubbed rifles, they had put the Prussian Guard to flight. "Well," drawled the Canadian, "they did run. They certainly did run some. And what's the matter with you, sonny? Hit?" "Buried," said Wakeman, "buried twice, and shrapnel in my leg, little bits."

By that time it had come to be hard sledding, so the sleigh was abandoned and the two travelers, determining to put farther west, mounted the horses and continued their journey to Huron county. Here they fell in with Judge Wright and Ruggles, who were surveying the Fire Lands. They wanted a saw-mill, and Johnson's uncle contracted to build one at the town of Jessup, now known as Wakeman.

Of course, Marie Wakeman started it; she said she was bound to go to a political meeting and sit on the platform; arguing wasn't a bit of use. When she got Clara on her side I knew that I was doomed. Now, you couldn't get them to do a thing of this kind at home; but take a woman out of her natural sphere, and she ignores conventionalities, just like a girl in a bathing-suit.
