At one time it would be poetising and versifying that decided my choice of a friend; at another, theatrical enterprises, while now and then it would be a longing for rambling and mischief. Furthermore, when I reached my thirteenth year, a great change came over our family affairs.

"You've forgotten to ask me round," Hsiang-yuen laughed, "and I should, after all, fine you people! But produce the metre; for though I don't excel in versifying, I shall exert myself to do the best I can, so as to get rid of every slur. If you will admit me into the club, I shall be even willing to sweep the floors and burn the incense."

We do not want his rhythms and rhymes smoothed and made more melodious. They are as honest as Chaucer's, and we like them as they are, not modernized or manipulated by any versifying drill-sergeant, if we wanted them reshaped whom could we trust to meddle with them?

He perceived that there was much to inspire affection attractive qualities, amiable disposition, the talent for music, and now this recently discovered power of versifying, all were in Guy's favour, besides the ancient name and long ancestry, which conferred a romantic interest, and caused even Philip to look up to him with a feudal feeling as head of the family.

And he began versifying, "Love in my breast they lit and fared away, * And far the land wherein my love is pent: Far lies the camp and those who camp therein; * Par is her tent-shrine, where I ne'er shall tent.

When she had finished her versifying, she would have risen to pray, but, lo and behold! Hayat al-Nufus caught her by the skirt and clung to her saying, "O my lord, art thou not ashamed before my father, after all his favour, to neglect me at such a time as this?" When Queen Budur heard her words, she sat down in the same place and said, "O my beloved, what is this thou sayest?"

And he made at Jawamard versifying in these couplets, "I'm the noted knight in the field of fight, * Whose sabre and spear every foe affright!

The practical result of these cogitations was a decision to write 'Wallenstein' in verse. In versifying the completed scenes he found himself, so he wrote to Goethe, before a different tribunal. Much that had seemed very good in prose would not do at all; for verse tended to invest everything with an imaginative nimbus which rendered triviality and mere logic intolerable.

If it must be so, at least stay till I bid thee good-bye and make known my case." And she began versifying in these verses, "When love and longing and regret are mine, * Must not this body show of ills a sign? My love! say not, 'Thou soon shalt be consoled'; * When state speaks state none shall allay my pine.

He owed his success to his good looks, to the court he paid to the King's mistresses, to his skilfulness at play, and to a lucky stroke of fortune. The King had oftentimes been importuned to give him a lodging, and one day, joking with him upon his fancy of versifying; proposed to him some very hard rhymes, and promised him a lodging if he filled them up upon the spot.
