The process of refining sugar in vacuo is the most useful application of "the fact that liquids are driven off, or made to boil at lower degrees of heat when the atmospheric pressure is lessened or removed." The first part of the process is to dissolve impure sugar in water, and after clarifying the solution, to boil off or evaporate the water again, that the dry crystallized mass may remain.

An analysis of the human soul, such as may be found in the "House of the Seven Gables," for instance, is absolute in its interest, apart from outward conditions. But such an analysis cannot be carried on, so to say, in vacuo. You must have solid ground to stand on; you must have fitting circumstances, background, and perspective.

Every Freewillist holds that the special force of free volition is applied to the pre-existing forces of our corporeal structure; he does not consider it as an agency acting in vacuo, but as an agency acting upon other agencies. Every Freewillist holds that, upon the whole, if you strengthen the motive in a given direction, mankind tend more to act in that direction.

That a body in vacuo falls sixteen feet in the first second, forty-eight in the second, and so on in the ratio of the odd numbers, is as much a uniform sequence as that when the supports are removed the body falls.

Education makes both possible. It puts the means of salvation at the service of all, and, prevents the faculties from moving about in vacuo, and finally standing still from sheer hopelessness. The educated man has a whole magazine of appliances at his command, and his intellect is trained in using them, while the uneducated man has nothing but his strength, and his training is limited to its use.

It was a lover and his lass That o'er the green cornfield did pass this is the essential; and we ask no more if we are wise. The very essence, be it remembered, of the pastoral ideal is no more than 'love in vacuo. And this the lyric alone can give us.

I am only trying to look at the thing dispassionately, you see. We are so much the slaves of mere repetition. Here is life yours and mine a kind of plenum in vacuo.

It suffices to cause the current of water which issues from the condenser of the frigorific machine to pass into the worm of the boiler. We have, then, two results, two like operations, both produced by the working of a single machine. Moreover, these two operations are performed in vacuo, and we know that under these conditions they are effected at lower temperatures.

We propose briefly to show how this creed works out what is its ethical counterpart or issue not by arguing in vacuo what it must be, but by presenting to the reader three selected illustrations taken from the writings of as many exponents of this type of Monism. In his volume First and Last Things a work which he significantly calls "a confession of faith and rule of life" Mr.

They meet, like Democritus's atoms, in vacuo, and by a fortuitous jostling together produce the greatest and most savage beast in the whole world; for though the members of it may have something of human nature while they are asunder, when they are put together they have none at all, as a multitude of several sounds make one great noise unlike all the rest, in which no one particular is distinguished.
