"Unconquering but unconquered" may be the best motto that we can hope to deserve, but for all those who inscribe it on their banners a strange happiness does creep into the soul. I have the greatest sympathy with married couples who never read any books or pamphlets containing advice to married people, and are determined that they never will.

The desire of course precedes the act, and should have one's first attention; it can do but little good to refuse the act over and over again, always leaving the desire unmolested, unconquered; the desire will continue to assert itself, and will be almost sure to win in the long run. When the desire intrudes, it should be at once banished out of the mind.

Surrounded by envious powers, it becomes them to be vigilant; conscious of the value of their unconquered state, it is no wonder that they love her; and surely the true Amor Patriæ never glowed more warmly in old Roman bosoms than in theirs, who draw, as many families here do, their pedigree from the consuls of the Commonwealth.

Be thou my charioteer, O best of men, I will fight with the Kurus. Thus speaking unto Uttara, the son of Virata, Vibhatsu, heretofore unconquered in battle, for a while comforted him. And then the son of Pritha, that foremost of smiters, raised on the car that fainting and reluctant prince stricken with fear!"

The Ottoman Turks. The fall of Constantinople. The enslaving of the Bulgars, Serbs, Greeks, Albanians, and Roumanians. One little part of Serbia unconquered. The further conquests of the Turks. The attack on Vienna. John Sobieski to the rescue. The waning of the Turkish empire. The Spanish Jews. The jumble of languages and peoples in southeastern Europe.

That gift would surely be a weapon in his hands by means of which, or with the help of which, he would conquer the still unconquered mystery, Rosamund's whole heart. South Africa had done much for Dion. Out there in that wonderful atmosphere he had seen very clearly, his vision had pierced great distances; he saw clearly still, in England.

It was really Rupert's hitherto unconquered cavalry which was thus borne down by Cromwell's horse. p. 216, l. 4. A posset was a drink of milk curdled with an acid liquid. p. 219, l. 40. The Grisons are the people of one of the Swiss Cantons. p. 222, l. 36. Newcastle was not retaken by Rupert. p. 230, l. 8.

The utmost that Bismarck would do was not to insist upon securing the still unconquered Belfort. Despairing of moving him further, Thiers and Favre gave way on the 24th of February, and signed the preliminaries of peace.

When I leaned over her, I had fallen utterly and entirely into the power of the evil one, and was an ally of the deadliest enemy of Him to whom I had dedicated my life and soul. Of what avail was my flight from the world, and my useless sojourn in the desert? He who always keeps out of the way of the battle can easily boast of being unconquered to the end-but is he therefore a hero?

To a truly illustrious Frenchman, whose reverses as a minister can never obscure his achievements in the world of letters, we are indebted for the most profound and most eloquent estimate that we possess of the importance of the Germanic element in European civilization, and of the extent to which the human race is indebted to those brave warriors, who long were the unconquered antagonists, and finally became the conquerors, of Imperial Rome.
