The purple ant of the east coast has disappeared, and a similar one with brick-coloured head and thorax, but by no means so voracious, has taken its place. The flooded-gum and the bloodwood were in blossom: this usually takes place, at Moreton Bay, in November and December.
The regent "saw and shook;" and uttering a faint gurgle from beneath the wadded bag which surrounded his royal thorax, he was heard to whisper with dismay, "D n him! what a cravat!" The triumph was complete.
The under side of the lower wings has a dark brown band at the base, widest close to the attachment of the wing and narrowing to a large ocellus which it surrounds in the form of a narrow brown ring; the black ocellus has a very small white pupil with a slight bluish crescent on the inside, and is surrounded by a fulvous ring; thcre is a second black ocellus nearer the hind edge than the middle, with a small white pupil and a wideish fulvous ring, separated from the white of the wing by a narrow brown ring; head, antennae, legs, and thorax in front brown; palpi fulvous.
It has a soft, depressed body, spiny beneath at the base of the legs and on the thorax. One or both of the two posterior pairs of feet bear suckers, and all are more or less covered with long, slender hairs. This insect may be destroyed by the same remedies as are used for lice and for the human itch. The best remedy is probably a solution of sulphuret of potassium.

These four pairs of appendages represent the four rings of the head, to which they are appended in the order stated above. A pair of legs is appended to each of the three rings of the thorax; while the first and second rings each usually carry a pair of wings. The abdomen contains the ovipositor; sometimes, as in the bees and wasps, forming a sting. Moreover, there are four pairs of legs.
