All, however, Guapo alone excepted, preferred the flesh of the purple macaws, which, cooked as they were with onions and red pepper, were excellent eating, particularly for Spanish-American palates. Guapo had all the tapir to himself.
The rhinoceros, elephant, and tapir still exist in Yünnan. The domestic animals include the camel and the water-buffalo. There are about 700 species of birds, and innumerable species of fishes and insects. Sociological Environment On their arrival in what is now known as China the Chinese, as already noted, fought with the aboriginal tribes.
Numberless other curious creatures are roaming through the forest, or feeding on the banks; many others, having run their destined course, disappear from the face of the globe, to be replaced by a new creation of far less magnitude the mild llama, the savage jaguar, the nimble monkey with prehensile tail, the ant-eater, arborial and terrestrial; the diminutive sloth, thick-skinned tapir, alligators, turtles, and manatees; lizards, serpents; the beautiful denizens of the air with superb plumage, numerous species of humming-birds, gorgeous butterflies and beetles, vieing in their shining hues with the rich gems hidden within the bowels of the earth.
The beating, therefore, proceeded as lively as ever, and the hunters and dogs now penetrated to the centre of the thicket. "Again the quick angry yelping of the latter fell upon the ear; and again the thick cover rustled and shook. "`This time the tapir, said the chief to me in an undertone, adding the next moment in a louder voice, `Look yonder! "I looked in the direction pointed out.
When attacked by either men or fierce animals, it tries to escape by flight, and if that fails, submits to be killed; but there is no "light" to be got out of a tapir. The tapir leads a very solitary life, being met with alone, or sometimes in the company of the female.
When the Indian intends to chase the peccari, or surprise the deer, or rouse the tapir from his marshy retreat, he carries his bow and arrows, which are very different from the weapons already described. The bow is generally from six to seven feet long and strung with a cord spun out of the silk-grass.
They hunted and killed specimens of the jaguar, tapir, peccary, and nearly all of the other strange South American animals. In February 1914, they set out upon an unknown stream called the River of Doubt. They did not know whether the exploration of this river would take them weeks or months; whether they might have to face starvation, or savage tribes, or worse than either, disease.
The balza was gliding directly under it! It could launch itself aboard at will. It could seize upon any one of the party without coming from the branch. It could coil its body around them, and crush them with the constricting power of its muscles. It could do all this; for it had crushed before now the tapir, the roebuck, perhaps even the jaguar himself.
There are some large quadrupeds too, as the Indian rhinoceros, and the Sumatran tapir; and although the flesh of these great thick-skinned animals is neither tender nor delicate, yet men who can get no other soon find themselves in a position to relish it, despite its toughness and its coarse texture.
It frequently leaves its lair during rain, and goes in search of food. Like hogs it is very fond of wallowing in a muddy place; but, unlike these slovenly animals, it does not return to its bed until it has plunged into the clear water, and thoroughly purified itself of the mud. One habit of the tapir and an unfortunate one for itself is that in going its rounds it always follows the old track.
