Philo says, "Of philosophy, the dialectical department, as being in no wise necessary for the acquisition of virtue, they abandon to the word-catchers; and the part which treats of the nature of things, as being beyond human nature, they leave to speculative air-gazers, with the exception of that part of it which deals with the subsistance of God and the genesis of all things; but the ethical they right well work out."

These are two points, which we shall endeavour to prove as distinctly as possible. We have already shewn, that men invented the three fundamental laws of nature, when they observed the necessity of society to their mutual subsistance, and found, that it was impossible to maintain any correspondence together, without some restraint on their natural appetites.

I shall now proceed to give an account of the appearance, habits, mode of life, means of subsistance, social relations, government, ceremonies, superstitions, numbers, languages, etc. etc. of the natives of Australia, so as to afford some insight into the character and circumstances of this peculiar race, to exhibit the means hitherto adopted for, and the progress made in attempting, their civilization, and to shew the effects produced upon them by a contact with Europeans.

But unfortunately for him, by the time he grew big enough to go out apprentice, or to enter upon any other method of living, his friends suddenly dropped off, and, by their death becoming in great want of money, he was forced to resign all the golden hopes he had formed and for the sake of present subsistance submit to becoming footman to a gentleman, who was, however, a very good and kind master to him, till in about a year's time he died also, and poor Smith was again left at his wits' end.

Funds will also be remitted on account of their subsistance when this office is informed that they are needed. Respectfully, THOMAS H. HARVEY, Esq., St. Louis, Mo. The church in the Tuscarora Reservation was organized in the year 1805, embracing six members only, under the care of the New York Missionary Society. Rev. Elkanah Holmes, first missionary, from 1805 to 1808.

He asked for leave to stay in the house he had built for a few months, and his petition in November ought to be read to understand how heretics were made to suffer: "1st. The time of the year is unseasonable, being now very near the shortest day, and the depth of winter. "2d. The place unto which I go is unknown to me and my family, and the ways and means of subsistance.... "3d.

This dreadful disorder, which, there is no doubt, is a distemper natural to the country, together with the difficulty of procuring a subsistance, renders the situtation of these poor wretches truly miserable. The girl lived with the chaplain's wife, and both she and the boy were very tractable; but the girl at times would be out of temper, and could not bear to be thwarted.
