Scouts had reported to Johnson that Milroy was concentrating at M'Dowell, twenty miles to the westward, and that Schenck, sent on by Fremont, had joined or would join him. Any hour they might move eastward on Staunton. Banks Fremont Milroy three armies, forty thousand men all converging on Staunton and its Home Guard, with the intent to make it even as Winchester!
"Indeed, sir," returned Jeanie, "I have been brought up to shun evil communication. But these wicked people were thieves, and stopped me by violence and mastery." "Thieves!" said Mr. Staunton; "then you charge them with robbery, I suppose?" "No, sir; they did not take so much as a boddle from me," answered Jeanie; "nor did they use me ill, otherwise than by confining me."
She came in with her accustomed eager, purposeful walk. She sat down on the nearest chair, and began to talk cheerfully to the children and sympathetically to Mrs. Staunton. As soon as she had an opportunity, however, she drew Effie aside. "Now, my dear," she said, looking straight into Effie's brown eyes, "when are you coming to us?"
The section that received my closest attention has its northern limit along the Potomac between McCoy's ferry at the eastern base of the North Mountain, and Harper's Ferry at the western base of the Blue Ridge. The southern limit is south of Staunton, on the divide which separates the waters flowing into the Potomac from those that run to the James.
In the packet of papers which the express had brought to Sir George Staunton from Edinburgh, and which Butler, authorised by his connection with the deceased, did not scruple to examine, he found new and astonishing intelligence, which gave him reason to thank God he had taken that measure.
"Now," said Captain Staunton, "we'll rouse the steward, make him prepare and serve out a first-rate breakfast to all hands; and then `Hey! for a pull to the ship." This was accordingly done.
It might be argued, however, that with an antagonist so supine as Banks Jackson might have openly marched to Staunton by the most direct route; in fact, that he need never have left the Valley at all. But, had he taken the road across the Valley, he would have advertised his purpose.
"There," he added, as they once more reached the rocks, "that'll do, mates; lay me down here in the shade, and tell Mr Evelin I'm hurt presently, you know; after he's brought the little girl round." In the meantime Lance, almost as much concerned as Captain Staunton, had hurried after the latter, and offered his assistance, which was thankfully accepted.
"Straight from Staunton telegram to the colonel in Charlottesville. 'Big fighting at Port Republic. Jackson whipped Shields. Stonewall Brigade suffered heavily. No'm That was all. We won't hear details till to-morrow. My boy John's in the Stonewall, you know but Lord! John always was a keerful fellow!
Passing by these whimsical tales, we have now to add that the legislature, having on the 7th of June entered upon its work at Staunton, steadily continued it there until the 23d of the month, when it adjourned in orderly fashion, to meet again in the following October.
