It exists in both rough draft and final copy. In this story, as in all Mary Shelley's writing, there is much that is autobiographical: it would be hard to find a more self-revealing work. For an understanding of Mary's character, especially as she saw herself, and of her attitude toward Shelley and toward Godwin in 1819, this tale is an important document.
The dwarf's report about Klussman forced Madame La Tour to watch the strange girl; but Marguerite seemed to take no notice of any soldier who came and went in the hall. As for the Swiss, he carried trouble on his self-revealing face, but not treachery.
She was standing, her elbow on the mantel-piece and her cheek on her hand, looking down into the fire. His footsteps roused her from her reverie and she looked up, in that moment of surprise, forgetful of self and therefore self-revealing. So just in so far as the sensory individual is less active, to that degree he is less expressive, less self-revealing.
This process of human discovery is yet more truly a process of the Divine self-revealing. In each and every real knowledge man is learning to know God. Each truth of science is a manifestation of somewhat in the Infinite Power in whom we live and move and have our being.
Greater significance attaches to the fact that some of the self-revealing verse lamenting the decay of inspiration in old age is equivocal, as Landor's
I'll never, " The rest was lost in his throat and was quite unintelligible to the anxious listener. Self-revealing words, which an instant before would have aroused Sweetwater's deepest interest!
