As the philosopher thinks, so the prophet preaches, so the poet sings. Thinking, speaking, singing, are the three acts in the ascending scale of the soul's self-manifestation. Generally speaking, these high functions are not found in their perfection in one and the same soul; rarely do you meet with the spirit of the philosopher, prophet and poet incarnate in one mortal frame.
Like the poet of Pauline, after his immersion in worldliness, Sordello again seeks solitude, and recovers a portion of his higher self; but solitude cannot content one who is unable to obtain the self-manifestation which his nature demands without the aid of others who may furnish an external body for the forces that lie suppressed within him.
It is a great truth, too often buried in these days under rubbish of materialistic theories, that some way of self-manifestation is a supreme necessity of all sentient life. From the hot centre of thought and feeling the currents rush along the nervous ways and pervade the whole frame, seeking an outlet. But many passages are barred by duty, or fear, or eager purpose.
Expressiveness in the former case is dead, like that of a fossil; in the latter it is living and efficacious, recreating its original. The first is idle self-manifestation, the second rational art. Self-manifestation, so soon as it is noted and accepted as such, seems to present the same marvel as any ideal success.
The 'riches of His glory' can be nothing less than the whole uncounted abundance of that majestic and far-shining Nature, as it pours itself forth in the dazzling perfectness of its own Self-manifestation. And nothing less than this great treasure is to be the limit and standard of His gift to us.
'That he would grant you' is the daring petition of the Apostle, 'according to the riches of His glory to be strengthened. There is the measure. There is no limit except the uncounted wealth of His own self-manifestation, the flashing light of revealed divinity.
The Pope had read rapidly through these objective facts, for He knew them well enough already, and was now studying with close attention the summary of his character, or rather, as the author rather sententiously explained, the summary of his self-manifestation to the world.
The Bible begins with His nature and thence interprets His work. The work in which God delights is the utterance of His love in blessing. The very essence of love is self-manifestation. The very being of God is love, and all being delights in its own self- manifestation, in its own activity. How great the thought is that He is glad when we let Him satisfy His nature by making us glad!
