Estimates vary as to the proportion of deaths to bites. Prentiss Willson believes that something over ten per cent. of all persons bitten by venomous snakes in the United States die. As to how many of these succumb, not to the venom, but to the misdirected efforts of misguided friends at treatment an extremely important differentiation he lacks the data upon which to base a reckoning.
It was thus that the traveller in those days was able to traverse the province from one end to the other, with the certainty of finding food and shelter, and a welcome at any hut where he might call. He was most cordially received at Prentiss Town, where he arrived late in the evening; but he went to a house of mourning.
The two Illinois regiments, though not followed, failed to rally, and fell back to a bluff near the landing, where Colonel Webster was putting batteries into position. General Bragg, hearing of the death of General Johnston while he was superintending operations in front of Prentiss and W.H.L. Wallace, rode to the Confederate right.
Prentiss, the housekeeper, had her daughter with her on a visit, and the daughter's baby lay asleep in a cradle placed upon two chairs, outside the little circle of women round the table, one of whom was Jervis, Lady Mary's maid. Jervis sat and worked and cried, and mixed her words with little sobs. "I never thought as I should have had to take another place," she said.
Withers' First Brigade Gladden's having been disordered in its first attack on Prentiss, when General Gladden was killed remained an hour at halt in Prentiss' camp. After its sharp repulse in the later attack, the brigade drifted to its right, following the course of preceding brigades, came in front of Hurlbut's line, and moved to the attack.
Miss Carr sat down, giggling delightedly, and the younger Ladies laughed, and the older Ladies smiled. But Mrs. Prentiss turned to Fairy gravely. "How old are you, my dear?" And with a too-apparent effort, Fairy answered, "Sixteen!" "Indeed!" A simple word, but so suggestively uttered. "Shall we continue the meeting, Ladies?"
I therefore gave General Prentiss the situation of the troops and the general condition of affairs, and started for St. Louis the same day. The movement against the rebels at Greenville went no further. From St. Louis I was ordered to Jefferson City, the capital of the State, to take command.
Nelly Sanborn has reached six thousand, although her anxious father long since tried to buy her off by offering her a new Bible twice as handsome as the prize one: but what did she care for that? she said; she had handsome Bibles already, but she had no intention of being beaten by Ella Prentiss.
Her humor was of the western flavor droll exaggeration a little grim, while in her unexpected turns of speech, Prentiss found a constant source of entertainment. He had told her of the Toomeys and the circumstances in which they had met; also of the letter endeavoring to interest him in the irrigation project. "Do you know them?" he had asked, and she had replied merely, "Somewhat."
