"Madame, it is a very great responsibility," begins the sly maid, now confidante. There is a strong sharp accent on the "very." "I will pay you as you never dreamed of being paid." Madame Natalie is cool and quiet. Gold, blessed gold! "It is well. I am yours for life," says Marie Berard. The two women's eyes meet. They understand one another. Feline, prehensile nerves. Then, action at once.

They sat down with sighs of relief, and the "'possum" disappeared without a word being spoken. "Beggar was eating earth-nuts over there, and I bowled him over with a stick. See, there's his skin long tail and sharp face." "Monkey," said Mr. Hume. "Prehensile tail," muttered Venning, examining that appendage. "Anyway, it was good. See anything more?" "Lots.

The smallest species called the Ouatiri, or Two-toed Ant-eater differs altogether from the three above-mentioned. It more resembles a little monkey, and is covered all over with a thick coat of soft woolly hair of a yellowish colour. It is also a tree-climber, possesses a naked prehensile tail, and makes its nest in a hole in the trunk, or in one of the larger branches.

So great is it, that even after the animal has died from the effect of a shot or other wound, its tail will still remain hooped around the branch; and if the body is not taken down by the hunter, it will hang there till released by the decay of the tail! Not all the monkeys of America possess this prehensile power of tail.

But the true parrots go a step further in the same direction than the woodpeckers or the toucans; for, in addition to prehensile feet, they have also a highly-developed prehensile bill, and within it a tongue which acts in reality as an organ of touch.

The neck is shorter and thicker, and, as the animal increases in height, we can understand that the long snout possibly prehensile at its lower end is necessary for the animal to reach the ground. But the snout still lies on the projecting lower jaw, and is not a trunk. The long supporting skin disappears, and the enormous snout becomes a flexible trunk.

He was wizened, sallow, small, a margin of red hair round a head bald as a bowl, grotesque under a black wig tied on with a handkerchief. And he had gone up in life much the way a monkey climbs, by shifts and scrambles and prehensile hoists with frequent falls. It was an ill turn of fortune that sent him to America in the first place.

And then the light opening was suddenly darkened. "Blest if it ain't just like a great horse-leech such as we used to find in the water-crease beds, only about ten million times as big;" and the lad stood helplessly staring as he saw the monster's trunk thrust right in through the wall and beginning to wave up and down and from side to side, wondrously elastic, the nostrils at the end in this semi-darkness looking like a pair of little wet eyes, between which the prehensile part moved up and down like a tiny pug-nose.

This is the case with the male Ibla, and in a truly extraordinary manner with the Proteolepas: for the carapace in all other cirripedes consists of the three highly-important anterior segments of the head enormously developed, and furnished with great nerves and muscles; but in the parasitic and protected Proteolepas, the whole anterior part of the head is reduced to the merest rudiment attached to the bases of the prehensile antennæ.

They have two molar teeth less in each jaw than the Cebidae, the other family of American monkeys; they agree with them, however, in the sideway position of the nostrils, a character which distinguishes both from all the monkeys of the old world. The body is long and slender, clothed with soft hairs, and the tail, which is nearly twice the length of the trunk, is not prehensile.
