I shrank from Kenneth a little, but not much, for it was kind of him so kind and generous to suffer that awful cold for me. What surprised me was that he made no opposition to my resting in Phillip's arms, and Phillip did not seem to mind his drawing close to me. But Kenneth explained: "Mr. Rutley has told me you are already his wife, Minnie. Is that true?"
Soon after the departure of the Golden Grove, I made public the following extract from Governor Phillip's letter to me:
Colebe, and Ballederry, the young man who has been mentioned as living chiefly at Governor Phillip's house, were desirous of joining this party; and, as much information was expected from them, they were encouraged to go, and they carried their own provisions.
It is to be hoped that Phillip's conversational account of his studies has been correctly reproduced here. The chemical terms look rather weak, but the memory of an ordinary listener can hardly be expected to retain such a mass of technicalities. He had piles of strongly-bound books, the reward of successful examinations, besides diplomas and certificates of proficiency.
The latter was pressing us awfully hard that day, and when I observed our troops slowly giving ground, I went out in person to see if the look on Phillip's face had something to do with it. But I soon changed my mind. He was all along the line encouraging his men to hold on, he helped to put new Lewis guns in position.
The day before your mother died, I received a long letter from Phillip. It was written at Rome. Every line of that letter, was eloquent with Phillip's steadfast devotion, and love for me. In brief, a complete verification of what the warning voice had told me. His parents had relented. He was coming home to make me his bride. He had planned to arrive at Boston, in time to celebrate the New Year.
March they did, through the thickets and swamps of the base of the main point, to enter the upper part of the Poppasquash Neck. Here the captain sent forward Lightfoot the Sogkonate, with three other Indians, to scout. Lightfoot took with him, as one, a Wampanoag of King Phillip's defeated army, named Nathaniel.
The Home Government, when they did despatch a second fleet, instead of sending supplies for the starving people under Phillip's care, sent more prisoners, and very little to eat was sent with them.
Its perfect success. Slaughter of the Indians. Burning the wigwams. Refreshment after battle. Alarm of the party. Terrible peril. Bravery of Captain Holyoke. Heroic action. Dawn of hope. Escape. Rage of the Indians. Assault upon Hatfield. Unexpected assistance. Heroism. Attack upon Hadley. A sudden appearance. Superstition. General Goffe. Old tradition. Union of forces. Phillip's strategem.
Phillip's despatches contain passages that strikingly show his peculiar qualifications in both these respects.
