What had happened was this: The Irish members had put a number of questions on the notice-paper, but, anxious in every way to spare the Old Man, they quietly left the questions unasked; and so, when, as he thought, there was still a whole lot of preliminary business to go through, all was over, and the way was quite clear for his start.
Parson, for a junior, was very well up in the "rules of the House," and at his suggestion the notice-paper for to-morrow's assembly was got hold of and filled with "amendments." There was the usual lively time before the regular business was reached over "Questions," of which there were a good many on the notice-paper.
