This version was written down for me, many years ago, by an aged lady in Morayshire. I published it in the 'Revue Celtique'; but it is probably new to story-comparers, in its broad Scotch variant. There once lived a king and a queen. They were long married and had no bairns; but at last the queen had a bairn, when the king was away in far countries.
An ancestor of the then Lord Duffus was walking in the fields near his house in Morayshire when he heard the noise of a whirlwind and of voices crying: "Horse and Hattock!" This was the exclamation fairies were said to use "when they remove from any place."
So far as the payment of an exorbitant rent in advance, and the receipt of innumerable letters from a restless and fussy steward whom he had not yet seen, went as evidence, he knew himself to be the tenant in possession of a great shooting in Morayshire.

We do hear of them, for the reigns of the successors of Malcolm Canmore are largely occupied with revolts in Galloway and in Morayshire.
The Mackays were beginning to occupy the western parts of Strathnavern, their title being probably their swords, and they held their lands "manu forti," their country being a refuge for their Morayshire kinsmen, the MacHeths, who were in constant rebellion.

He holds his place in English literature by virtue of his sermons especially that on The Ploughers which, like himself, are outspoken, homely, and popular, with frequent touches of kindly humour. Novelist and miscellaneous writer, s. of a Scottish baronet, wrote two novels, Lochandhu , and The Wolf of Badenoch , but is best known for his Account of the Great Floods in Morayshire in 1829.
