Italian Scenarios and English "Platts" Pantaloon Tarleton, the Clown Extemporal Comedy The Poet Milton Ben Jonson The Commonwealth "A Reign of Dramatic Terror" Robert Cox and his "Humours" and "Drolleries" The Restoration. It has been thought that our dramatic poet, Massinger, drew upon the Italian Comedy for the humour of some of his plays.
Their ancestors were an ancient Welsh family and great friends of their compatriots, the Tudor sovereigns. Here, as constant and welcome guests, came Ben Jonson, Edmund Spencer and Philip Massinger, who was a son of one of the Earl's servants. Here As You Like It is said to have been played before James I, with Shakespeare himself as one of the company.
A sense of evanescence, of dreamlikeness, quite different from the thoughtless enjoyment of Boiardo, from the bold and manly facing of the future, the solemn, strong sense of life and death as of waking realities, of the Elizabethan dramatists, even of weaklings like Massinger and Beaumont.
Then as evening came on there were the playhouses to draw us, Dorset Gardens, Lincoln's Inn, Drury Lane, and the Queen's among the four there was ever some amusement to be found. 'There, at least, your time was well employed, said I; 'you could not hearken to the grand thoughts or lofty words of Shakespeare or of Massinger without feeling some image of them in your own soul.
He appears to me to bear the greatest resemblance to Beaumont and Fletcher in the plan of the pieces, in the tone of manners, and even in the language and negligences of versification. I would not undertake to decide, from internal symptoms, whether a play belonged to Massinger, or Beaumont and Fletcher.

He seems to have acquired early in life, and to have retained to the last a softness of versification peculiar to himself. Without the majestic march of verse which distinguishes the poetry of Massinger, and with none of that playful gaiety which characterises the dialogue of Fletcher, he is still easy and harmonious.
Studien, a German periodical for English literature and philology. Act I. The First Scene is by Massinger, who almost always begins the joint plays. On page 210 we have When I should pass with glory to my rest. Compare Virgin Martyr, V. 2. 319. When thou shouldst pass with honour to thy rest. On page 211, And end that race You have so long run strongly, like a child,
But don't you conceive all poets after Shakspeare yield to 'em in variety of genius? Massinger treads close on their heels; but you are most probably as well acquainted with his writings as your humble servant. My quotations, in that case, will only serve to expose my barrenness of matter.
The comic of Jonson is a scholar's excogitation of the comic; that of Massinger a moralist's. Shakespeare is a well-spring of characters which are saturated with the comic spirit; with more of what we will call blood-life than is to be found anywhere out of Shakespeare; and they are of this world, but they are of the world enlarged to our embrace by imagination, and by great poetic imagination.
