In those parts of the monarchy which come within the more strictly Eastern lands the Roman and the Rouman, we may so distinguish the Romance-speaking inhabitants of Dalmatia and the Romance-speaking inhabitants of Transsilvania. The Slav of the north and of the south, the Magyar conqueror, the Saxon immigrant, all abide as distinct races.

For a new purpose had stolen upon him in these weeks the sudden desire for wealth. He craved money for but one object to cast it at the feet of Irma Gluyas and then to bear her away from a world of lies to the storied Danube, where woman's rosy lip rests in clinging transports upon lips speaking the wild love of the gallant Magyar land. He now knew the power of wealth.

The Hungarian, or Magyar, regiments were probably in the majority. But the Magyars from the interior of Hungary have no special reason to hate the Serbians, and, aside from that, they were attacking on foreign soil. At the head of the Austrian campaigns against Serbia was General Potiorek, generally described as a textbook strategist.

Unfortunately the realisation of Roumanian unity inevitably involves the inclusion in the new State of considerable Magyar and Saxon minorities, amounting in all to not less than 600,000 inhabitants.

But this was the very thing which the controllers of Austrian foreign policy the phantom Minister Berchtold, the sinister clique in the Foreign Office, and the Magyar oligarchy, led by that masterful reactionary, Count Tisza, the Hungarian Premier were anxious to avoid. Salonica still remained the secret Austrian objective, and Serbia the main obstacle to the realisation of this dream.

They contained photographs of Austrian prisoners of war in Italian camps, very contented apparently, and explanations in German, Magyar and various Slav tongues, showing "men who yesterday were living from hour to hour in peril of death, now waiting happily and calmly in perfect safety for the war to end, when they shall return to their homes to embrace once more their wives and little children.

The ladies have something of the frankness of superior Americans the sort of Americans that Lord Lytton describes in 'The Parisians' and in consequence conversation has more vivacity than with us. In the elder generation you may detect far more of national peculiarity; in some cases they retain the national dress, and with it the Magyar pride and ostentation, so strongly dashed with Orientalism.

There was no chance for doubt; the indistinct nationality of the great lord spoken of thinly veiled the Magyar characteristics of Andras, and the paragraph which preceded the "Little Parisian Romance" was very skilfully arranged to let the public guess the name of the hero of the adventure, while giving to the anecdote related the piquancy of the anonymous, that velvet mask of scandal-mongers.

"Only a few words," said the jockey, "they were always chary in teaching me any." "They were vary sherry to me too," said the Hungarian, speaking in broken English; "I only could learn from them half-a-dozen words, for example, gul eray, which, in the czigany of my country, means sweet gentleman; or edes ur in my own Magyar."

It was Constance again who opened the conversation. 'Ah, Tony? 'Si, signorina? 'Did you ever read any Angleesh books or do you do most of your reading in Magyar? 'I haf read one, two, Angleesh books. 'Did you ever read er The Lightning Conductor, for example? 'No, signorina; I haf never read heem. 'I think it would interest you.
