Avoid stagnant water, and if mosquitoes are feared introduce some goldfish. They like mosquito larvæ. Water lilies and sagittaria one plant will do if the pool is small in the water and near it, but not in standing water, Japanese iris, yellow flag, globe flower, and Lythrum roseum are good selections. Forget-me-not is one of the finest plants for the banks.

GRATIOLA officinalis. HEDGE-HYSSOP. Herb. E. D. The leaves have a very bitter disagreeable taste: an infusion of a handful of them when fresh, or a dram when dried, is said to operate strongly as a cathartic. When you come to town next, may I beg the honour of a sitting for my brother-in-law, Mr. Sims, 73 Westbourne Grove? Yours very sincerely, P.S. Your paper on Lythrum salicaria is most beautiful. What a wonderful plant it is! I long to hear your paper on Tendrils and hear what you have got out of them.

Again, as in making reciprocal crosses between the same two species, there is occasionally a great difference in the result, so the same thing occurs with trimorphic plants; for instance, the mid-styled form of Lythrum salicaria was illegitimately fertilised with the greatest ease by pollen from the longer stamens of the short-styled form, and yielded many seeds; but the latter form did not yield a single seed when fertilised by the longer stamens of the mid-styled form.

Something of this kind, I should think, must occur at first with your butterflies and the three forms of Lythrum; though these cases are in appearance so wonderful, I do not know that they are really more so than every female in the world producing distinct male and female offspring. But it does not appear that the antisiphylitic powers of Lobelia have been confirmed by any instances of European practice. Woodville's Med. Bot. p. 251. LYTHRUM Salicaria. WILLOW HERB. The Herb. D. This is used internally in dropsies, obstinate gleets, and leucorrhoea. Similar Plants. Epilobium palustre; Epilob. angustifolium; Epilob. hirsutum. MALVA sylvestris. COMMON MALLOW. Herb.

Every pistil, in order to affect fertilization, must receive the pollen from the same length in another flower. Professor Darwin experimented with these flowers and wrote about them to Dr. Gray "I am almost stark, staring mad over Lythrum. If I can prove what I really believe, it is a grand case of trimorphism, with three different pollens and three stigmas.
