I now think I made a great mistake in not accepting this offer, though I was honestly diffident about my knowledge of navigation. I never had a clear understanding of the lunars, though I worked hard to master them. It is true, chronometers were coming into general use, in large vessels, and I could work the time; but a chronometer was a thing never heard of on board the James.

I took lunars several times on both sides of the moon, and have written a despatch for Lord Clarendon, besides a number of private letters. 3rd September, 1866. Went down to confluence of the Misinjé and came to many of the eatable insect "kungu," they are caught by a quick motion of the hand holding a basket.

Also erected a pile of stones on peak, thirty chains West-South-West of camp, with a pole in centre, on which is marked: J. FORREST, AUGUST 17, '74. Took four sets of lunars, which place spring in longitude 128 degrees East of Greenwich. 19th. Steering East-South-East along Mr.

Much cultivation must formerly have been where now all is jungle. We arrived at Mbanga, a village embowered in trees, chiefly of the euphorbia, so common in the Manganja country further south. Kandulo, the headman, had gone to drink beer at another village, but sent orders to give a hut and to cook for us. We remained next day. Took lunars.

The sorghum is now in full ear. People make very neat mats of the leaves of the Shuaré palm. I got lunars this time. 9th May, 1868. Eight or ten men went past us this morning, sent by the chief to catch people whom he intends to send to his paramount chief, Matiamvo, as a tribute of slaves. Pérémbé gives the following list of the Casembes:

We observed the position of this fort to be latitude 55° 25' 35" N., longitude 107° 51' 00" W., by lunars reduced back from Fort Chipewyan, variation 22° 15' 48" W., dip 84° 13' 35". March 5. We recommenced our journey this morning, having been supplied with the means of conveyance by both the Companies in equal proportions. Mr.

At 6 o'Clock Java head, on the West end of Java, bore South-East by East, distant 5 Leagues; soon after this saw Princes Island, bearing East 1/2 South. Course and distance saild since Yesterday at Noon is North 24 degrees 30 minutes East, 70 Miles. No lunars had been taken since they left Savu, and there is a current running westward. Tuesday, 2nd.

Acting on this reasoning, he got the master of a neighbouring school to give me after-time lessons in mathematics and geography; and, in the course of a few months, I was able to be inducted into the mysteries of great circle sailing and the art of taking lunars, much to the admiration of Sam, whom I'm afraid I often took a delight in puzzling with trigonometrical phrases that sounded full of portentous difficulty, albeit harmlessly easy.

All navigators will tell you that from one day to another a ship may lose or gain more than five miles in her sailing-account, and again, in the matter of lunars, even expert lunarians are considered as doing clever work when they average within eight miles of the truth. I hope I am making it clear that I do not lay claim to cleverness or to slavish calculations in my reckonings.

On the 24th and 29th we took different sets of lunars, which gave our longitude as before, nearly 141 degrees 29 minutes, the variation of the compass being 5 degrees 14 minutes East. The month of April set in without any indication of a change in the weather. It appeared as if the flood gates of Heaven were closed upon us for ever.
