JOHNSON. 'Why, Sir, I think every man whatever has a peculiar style , which may be discovered by nice examination and comparison with others: but a man must write a great deal to make his style obviously discernible. As logicians say, this appropriation of style is infinite in potestate, limited in actu. Mr. Topham Beauclerk came in the evening, and he and Dr. Johnson and I staid to supper.
The difficulty lies in proving that it is so; therefore, logically sound. According to logicians, conclusions based upon negative premises are inherently unsound. In order to reach reliable conclusions, we must first have all of the essential facts in the case. We question seriously whether this was possible in the course of such a brief investigation as Dean Schneider made.
I knew now why grass had always seemed to me as queer as the green beard of a giant, and why I could feel homesick at home. The real trouble with this world of ours is not that it is an unreasonable world, nor even that it is a reasonable one. The commonest kind of trouble is that it is nearly reasonable, but not quite. Life is not an illogicality; yet it is a trap for logicians.
This was the object of logicians when they laid down that a species must be defined per genus et differentiam, meaning by the differentia one attribute included in the essence, i.e. in the connotation.
"Of which he is the brightest ornament," said Beauchamp, drinking off a glass of champagne. "My dear count," cried Morcerf, "you are at fault you, one of the most formidable logicians I know and you must see it clearly proved that instead of being an egotist, you are a philanthropist.
And since a large portion of our knowledge is thus acquired, logicians have persisted in representing the syllogism as a process of inference or proof; though none of them has cleared up the difficulty which arises from the inconsistency between that assertion, and the principle, that if there be any thing in the conclusion which was not already asserted in the premises, the argument is vicious.
It is agreed now among all men and all nations that any people may change its form of government to any other, if it wills to do so and if it can do so. There are two other points on which these Northern statesmen and logicians also insist, and these two other points are at any rate better worth an argument than that which touches the question of revolution.
For, that the scissors were bad, though Kate does not say so in her memoirs, I knew by an a priori argument, viz., because all scissors were bad in the year 1607. Now, say all decent logicians, from a universal to a particular valet consequentia, all scissors were bad: ergo, some scissors were bad.
The second kind of imperfect definition, therefore, in which the name of a class is defined by any of its accidents—that is, by attributes which are not included in its connotation—has been rejected from the rank of genuine Definition by all logicians, and has been termed Description.
Singular judgments have the value of universal judgments, the logicians say. The singular is not particular, it is universal. Man is an end, not a means. All civilization addresses itself to man, to each man, to each I. What is that idol, call it Humanity or call it what you like, to which all men and each individual man must be sacrificed?
