Of a scheme of re vision against which is pressed, in Virginia, the charge of Mariolatry; in Ohio, the charge of Latitudinarianism; and in Wisconsin the charge of Puritanic pravity, this much may at least be said, that it possesses the note of fairness. From henceforth suggestions of partisan bias are clearly out of order.

Indolence and timidity have united to popularise among us a flaccid latitudinarianism, which thinks itself a benign tolerance for the opinions of others. It is in truth only a pretentious form of being without settled opinions of our own, and without any desire to settle them. No one can complain of the want of speculative activity at the present time in a certain way.

It requires no higher sanction than the individual, because the individual is society's organ of truth; because only in the individual mind is society open to rational conviction. Latitudinarianism and tolerance in this sense bespeak a confidence in morality's ability to justify itself.

They attacked the writings of Toland and Burnet, the latter's book since recognized as one of the great treasures of Anglican literature. In the main, of course, the struggle was part of the perennial conflict between High Church doctrine and latitudinarianism. But that was only a fragment of the issue. What really was in question was the nature of the State's power over the Church.

Romanism, Latitudinarianism, Mysticism, Calvinism, Puritanism whatever form dissent might take from what they believed to be the true principles of the English Church, it was, as such, a departure from Catholic and orthodox tradition, it was but one or another phase of the odious sin of schism.

No doubt he had many admirers, especially among his own students. Yet the University, as a whole, stood slightly aloof from him, and before long in certain obscurantist circles cautious hints of latitudinarianism were murmured against him. For these mumblings there was absolutely no sort of foundation.

And sensitive and depressed as he often was the penalty of the optimist her faith in him had doubled his faith in himself. There was a singular pleasure also in the link his love for her had forged between himself and Elsmere the dead leader of an earlier generation. "Latitudinarianism is coming in upon us like a flood!" cried the Church Times, wringing its hands.

Meanwhile, however, refugee Flemings and Brabantines had sought an asylum in the city, and being, as usual, of the strictest sect of the Calvinists were shocked at the latitudinarianism which prevailed. To the honour of the city as it seems to us now but, to their horror, it was even found that one or two Papists had seats in the magistracy.

These, already alarmed by Sultan Murad's administrative reforms, would hardly have espoused the Sultan's defence with any vigour; and though Mehemet Ali himself was open to a charge of latitudinarianism, he had the one great claim upon orthodox Islam of having delivered the Holy Cities of Mecca and Medina from the Wahhabis.

Tillotson was universally regarded both by friends and foes as 'a Latitude man. His writings, therefore, may well serve to exemplify the moderate Latitudinarianism of a thoughtful and religious English Churchman at the beginning of the eighteenth century. Perhaps the first thing that will strike a reader of his works is the constant appeal on all matters of religion to reason.
