Immediately General Karr saw this, he became so alarmed that he set his soldiers the example of flight. All discipline at an end, they abandoned their comrades in front, and escaped as best they could. Pugasceff's Cossacks pursued the Russians for a distance of thirty miles, but did not succeed in overtaking the General. Fear lent him wings.
Every murder proves that hanging is not altogether deterrent; every hanging, that it is somewhat deterrent it deters the person hanged. A man's first murder is his crime, his second is ours. The socialists, it seems, believe with Alphonse Karr, in the expediency of abolishing the death penalty; but apparently they do not hold, with him, that the assassins should begin.
"Oh, you may be sure that he has dragged himself down to the strand to get the latest news about Grayskin!" Both the boy and the raven jumped to the ground, and hastened down to the shore. All the geese had come out of the lake, and stood talking with an old dog, who was so weak and decrepit that it seemed as if he might drop dead at any moment. "There's Karr," said Bataki to the boy.
All hands were on the table, but M. Alphonse Karr insisted on being allowed to break the circle, go under the table, or make any other sort of search whenever he pleased. Aïdé was observant enough to notice that a lady had casually dropped her bracelet, though she vowed that it 'was snatched from her by a spirit. 'It was certainly removed from her lap, and danced about under the table....
The man carried the baby elk home and shut it up in a calf stall in the cow shed. Then he got help to drag the mother elk from the marsh. Only after this had been done did he remember that he was to shoot Karr. He called the dog to him, and again took him into the forest. The game-keeper walked straight on toward the dog's grave; but all the while he seemed to be thinking deeply.
"Monsieur le Prince," said she, "do you know what is rumored in the foyer of the Francais? That you have offered me your hand!" "I offer you both my hands, in applause, Madame, every night of your performance," replied the gentleman so addressed. She smiled and made a feint at him with the dagger. "Excellent!" said she. "One is not enough for a tragedian But where is Alphonse Karr?"
He was in particular to attach the latter to him, for they were the very flower of the army. Karr left that night.
Toward evening he called me into his private office. "Phil, this land case is troubling me. I believe the papers we want are in that old cabin. Could you go out again to-morrow?" He smiled now. "Go and make a careful search of the premises. If there are any boxes, open them. I will give you an order from Sheriff Karr. And Phil, I believe I wouldn't take Marjie this time.
Karr knew them: They were Crooked-Back, who was a small elk, but had a larger hump than the others; Antler-Crown, who was the most dignified of the elk; Rough-Mane, with the thick coat; and an old long-legged one, who, up till the autumn before, when he got a bullet in his thigh, had been terribly hot-tempered and quarrelsome. "What in the world is happening to the forest?"
"You did right to retreat," said Karr. "A young elk bull with only a taglet crown must be careful about fighting with an old elk. Another would have disgraced his name in the whole forest by retreating without resistance, but such things needn't worry you who are going to move to a foreign land." Karr had barely finished speaking when Grayskin turned and walked down to the meadow.
