He has received just sufficient education to make him understand half the purport of the orders he receives, and to speculate on the nature of clean, incised, and shattering wounds. Thus, if he is told to deploy under fire preparatory to an attack, he knows that he runs a very great risk of being killed while he is deploying, and suspects that he is being thrown away to gain ten minutes' time.
S.S.W. from Yeovil. The church and hall are prettily grouped together on rising ground above the roadway. The church is chiefly Perp. with debased transepts and a N.E. tower of the same character but greater dignity. In the churchyard is the effigy of a woman, and another old tomb with incised figure stands near the church door. The Court hard by is a modernised 15th-cent. hall.
Why it should be unlikely that a people confessedly familiar with writing used it for the preservation of literature, when we know that even the Red Indians preserve their songs by means of pictographs, while West African tribes use incised characters, is certainly not obvious. Many sorts of prae-Phoenician writing were current during the Mycenaean age in Asia, Egypt, Assyria, and in Cyprus.
Eyes and eyebrows for the faces of statues in stone or bronze were likewise made of glass, as also bracelets. Glass was inserted into the hollows of incised hieroglyphs, and hieroglyphs were also cut out in glass. In this manner, whole inscriptions were composed, and let into wood, stone, or metal.
In c, however, is found the best example of the use of incised work as an aid in pottery decoration, for in this specimen there are semicircles, and rings with four triangles, straight lines, and circles. The symbolism of the whole figure has eluded analysis.
This bowl is exceptional in having an encircling band broken at two points, one of the components of which is red, the other black. Feather designs are conspicuous in plate CXLIX, a, b, in the former of which curved incised lines are successfully used.
In Thessaly fine red ware undecorated contemporary with red decoration on white. Chocolate paint on deep buff follows. Incised ware, geometric patterns white rubbed in. Figurines. Rude clay. Steatopygous. This civilization extended from northern edge of Thessaly as far south as Chaeronea. Use of bronze before end uncertain.
Elsewhere in the city we find incised quotations from his poem; but the Baptistery his "beautiful San Giovanni" is the only building in the city proper now remaining which Dante would feel at home in could he return to it, and where we can feel assured of sharing his presence.
They may be complicated by the introduction of septic material adhering to the instrument; the entrance of foreign bodies which lodge in the wound, not only carrying in septic matter, but acting as mechanical irritants; injury to deeper parts, which may at the time be difficult to detect. An apparently incised wound may be produced by a hard, blunt weapon over a bone e.g., shin or cranium.
The doorway at Number 6105 Germantown Avenue, Germantown, may be regarded as one of the best of the more ornate examples of this type. It has fluted columns, an intricately hand-tooled dentil course in the cornice, richly incised architraves and carved ovolo moldings. The denticulated molding has fluted dentils with horizontal connecting members forming a sort of continuous H pattern.
