The "Father of History," as Herodotus has been styled, was born at Halicarnassus, the centre of a Greek colony in Asia Minor, between the years 490 and 480 B.C., and lived probably to sixty, dying about the year 425 B.C. A great part of his life was occupied with travels and investigations in those lands with which his history is mainly concerned.
It makes a great show on the map, but when you ferret it out, it is nothing but show and snow and ice and woods and barrenness; and I, for one, hope we shall let Canada alone. With respect to the style of Proclus, it is pure, clear and elegant, like that of Dionysius Halicarnassus; but is much more copious and magnificent; that of Hierocles is venerable and majestic, and nearly equals the style of the greatest ancients; that of Sallust possesses an accuracy and a pregnant brevity, which cannot easily be distinguished from the composition of the Stagirite; and lastly, that of Damascius is clear and accurate, and highly worthy a most investigating mind.
Proceeding with his examination of the miscellaneous objects in the saloon, he may notice successively, the head of Jupiter, from Phrygia ; a curious sepulchral inscription from Halicarnassus , forbidding any one, except relations, from occupying the tomb to which it belonged; a bas-relief from Thessaly representing a dedication of hair to Poseidon: an alto-relievo torso of Triton ; and the pedestal of the statue of Jupiter Urius , which stood in the temple of that god, at the mouth of the Euxine.
If Halicarnassus fancied that I was cut up, dispersed, and annihilated by one disaster, he should weep tears of blood to see me rise, Phoenix-like, from the ashes of my dead hopes, to a newer and more glorious life. Here, having exhausted my classics, I took a long sweep down to modern times, and vowed in my heart never to give up the ship.
