Physical calamity never comes with the power to extinguish that which is essential to the highest manhood and womanhood, and never fails to bring with it a motive for the adjustment of the soul to its conditions. The little boy whose "Hail Columbia" has been ringing in my ears all day, accepted the conditions of his life, and the sting of his calamity has departed.

She came slowly through the hail from the direction of the dining-room, a blank-book and a pencil in her hand. "I'm making an inventory," she explained. "You know that everything will have to be sold?" He ignored this to hurry to his account of the interview with Guion. It had been brief, he said, and in a certain sense unsatisfactory.

The Old Man murmured to the roof, scarcely moving his lips; El Safy answered by rote, not moving any other muscles but his jaw's. As for the Assassins, they stayed squat against the walls, as if they had been dead men, buried sitting. At a sign from El Safy the abbot with veiled Jehane came down the hail, and stood before the white spectre on his throne. Jehane saw that this was really a man.

"Keep cool, John," were her whispered words, as I left her to take my place on the platform. "Oh, I shall be cool enough. I know every line by heart; have said it to myself one hundred and nineteen times without missing a word." I'm not going to bore you with the poem here; but will give the first four lines as they were written and as I spoke them: "Hail! Babbletown, fair village of the plain!

As this could scarcely be credited, on persons being sent to investigate the prodigy, a shower of stones fell from heaven before their eyes, just as when balls of hail are pelted down to the earth by the winds.

So far at least I had made no mistake; evidently this Père Cassati was "hail fellow, well met" among these riotous guards aboard the "Santa Maria," and I had played the part to their complete undoing. But now I was facing a new experience, and stiffened myself to meet it boldly, uncertain still what trick fate might have in store.

Could they have answered it in the affirmative, their own voices would soon have been uplifted in a joyous huzza; while the hail "Ship ahoy!" would have been sent through the sombre shadows of the mist, in the hope of its receiving an answer. Why was the hail not heard?

Higher leaped the flames and the rosy shadows fell upon the floor. "It's well we took the tent down and came in here," said Albert. "Listen to that!" The steady, driving sweep changed to a rattle and a crackle. The rain had turned to hail, and it was like the patter of rifle fire on the stout little cabin.

A moment of silence, then: "Me Indian; no pale-face name." Torrance rushed from the bedroom. "Is that the Indian? Good Heavens! The trestle the trestle!" He had thrown wide the front door and gone before they could interfere. A hail of bullets came through. Keener eyes among the trees picked out Torrance's running bulk, but their eyes were keener than their aim.

I enjoyed that pleasure in its utmost extent; it was one week after midsummer; the earth was covered with verdure and flowers, the nightingales, whose soft warblings were almost concluded, seemed to vie with each other, and in concert with birds of various kinds to bid adieu to spring, and hail the approach of a beautiful summer's day: one of those lovely days that are no longer to be enjoyed at my age, and which have never been seen on the melancholy soil I now inhabit.
