Early in August we learned that the Brigade would shortly take over the extreme left sector at Fusilier Bluff. After a reconnaissance of the position by Colonel Morrison and the Adjutant, a party of eight officers and sixteen N.C.O.'s went forward on August 6th to spend a night in the new firing line.
For a single instant only they stood so; an earnest and hurried murmur of French words passed between them, and they turned together, bowed with great suavity, and were gone. "The Cession is a mere temporary political manoeuvre!" growled M. Fusilier. Frowenfeld's merchant friend came from his place of waiting, and spoke twice before he attracted the attention of the bewildered apothecary.
Lieutenant Lindsay, who carried the colours of the Scots Fusilier Guards, stood firmly by them, when, as they stormed the heights, their line was somewhat disordered, and by his energy greatly contributed to restore order. In this he was assisted by Sergeants Knox and McKechnie, and Private Reynolds.
"Hope thou in God, for thou shalt yet praise Him," perchance occurred to some of them: who knows? Meanwhile the rescuers made for the Prince's lightship and were told that a vessel in distress was signalling on the higher part of the Girdler Sands. Away they went again, and this time were successful. They made for the Girdler lightship, and on the Girdler Sands they found the Fusilier.
Anna, Anna! what a brave and happy half-and-half of Creoles and "Americans" do your moist eyes beam down upon: here a Canonge and there an Ogden a Zacherie a Fontennette Willie Geddes Tom Norton a Fusilier! Nat Frellsen a Tramontana a Grandissime! and a Grandissime again!
Setting out on his return to France his orders were to join a Fusilier battalion, reporting to 34th Division he found Twyning on the platform at Tidborough station buying a paper. "Hullo, old man," said Twyning. "Just off? I say, old man, old Bright's very upset about Effie getting the sack from your place like that. How was it?" He felt himself flush.
Then tea. Then bombing. Then dinner. Then letter-writing. Now bed! "Would you mind sending me a Lancashire Fusilier cap badge?
Citizen Fusilier drew out a pair of spectacles, looked over his junior's shoulder, read aloud, "Aurore De G. Nanca ," and uttered an imprecation. "Do not speak to me!" he thundered; "do not approach me! she did it maliciously!" "Sir!" began Frowenfeld. But the old man uttered another tremendous malediction and hurried into the street and away. "Let him pass," said the other Creole calmly.
We say not whether with Zephyr Grandissime or Epaminondas Fusilier; that, for the time being, was her secret. The two captives were made guests.
As Frowenfeld, with every demonstration of beseeching kindness, began to speak, he lifted his eyes and said, piteously: "Stop! Stop!" "Citizen Fusilier, it is you who must stop. Stop before God Almighty stops you, I beg you. I do not presume to rebuke you. I know you want a clear record. I know it better to-day than I ever did before. Citizen Fusilier, I honor your intentions "
