Another letter tells of a visit from the Pope, troubles with his workmen, and his usual generosity to his brothers and father. "To BUONARROTO DI LODOVICO SIMONE, in Firenze "To be delivered at the shop of Strozzi, wool merchant, in the street of the Porta Rossa.

Quaint proverbs, not always of scrupulous refinement, old-world phrases, local allusions, are stuffed into the conversation of your real citizen or citizeness of Firenze la Gentile as thickly as the beads in the vezzo di corallo on the neck of a contadina.

It is, however, not invariably accurate, and the literary appreciations, whether original or borrowed, are seldom enlightening. Had the space occupied by these been devoted to giving references to special works, the value of the book would have been enormously increased. A. D'Ancona and O. Bacci. Manuale della letteratura italiana. 5 vols. Firenze, 1897-1900.

For an account of the Cathedral, see the Padre della Valle's "Storia del Duomo di Orvieto." "Il Duomo di Orvieto." Ludovico Luzi. Firenze. Le Monnier, 1866. I had strolled on the Lung Arno, I had long ago with my father on a winter tour looked into the little shops of the coral and pearl merchants on the Ponte Vecchio, and I had taken my apératif at Doney's or at Giacosa's. I was no stranger in Florence.

She believed herself in her comfortable bed at the Villa Firenze, and for a brief moment she wondered at the hardness of the mattress beneath her. Next she was aware that her head throbbed dully and that her mouth felt dry and harsh. She swallowed several times. Was she ill? Had anything happened? Then followed the discovery that she was fully dressed, even to her coat and shoes.
