He, too, was shocked, as I had been, and at first would have put the blame entirely upon the shoulders of Cousin Egbert, but at this I was obliged to admit that the Honourable George had too often shown a regrettable fondness for the society of persons that did not matter, especially females, and I cited the case of the typing-girl and the Brixton millinery person, with either of whom he would have allied himself in marriage had not his lordship intervened.
Cousin Egbert says, here he'd been up in one himself and knew what flying meant, but he probably wouldn't of took the least notice if this dare-devil had been killed right there before thousands. "I don't understand it," he says. "It sure wouldn't be the least use boosting for a brighter and busier Red Gap if everybody was as cold-blooded as the French."
Then the crew leapt on to the land and ascended the bank to the great level inclosure. The walls were, as Egbert had said, intact and indeed, except on the side facing the river, remained almost unbroken to the present day.
"I am going to West Falls again in a few days that is, if we do not get orders for Washington," Colonel Egbert Crawford said, speaking to his cousin, a few chapters back, as may be remembered.
Not knowing where to go, they and Egbert, the bishop of Nazareth who was unarmed and rode upon a mule, for stay behind he would not joined themselves to the great body of knights who followed the king.
It never occurred to her to refer to Egbert, if she were in difficulty or doubt. No, in all the serious matters she depended on her father. For Egbert had no intention of coming to grips with life. He had no ambition whatsoever. He came from a decent family, from a pleasant country home, from delightful surroundings. He should, of course, have had a profession.
"It is not a bit more perfunctory than the present system," said Egbert; "I have only the same conventional language of gratitude at my disposal with which to thank dear old Colonel Chuttle for his perfectly delicious Stilton, which we shall devour to the last morsel, and the Froplinsons for their calendar, which we shall never look at.
Thus it had come about that the bishop Egbert was ordered to nurse him, and, if possible to save his life; and when at last they marched upon Jerusalem, soldiers were told off to bear his litter, and a good tent was set apart to cover him. Now the siege of the holy city had begun, and there was much slaughter on both sides. "Will it fall?" asked Godwin.
Cousin Egbert just looked at the pictures in an uncomfortable manner. He spoke only once and that was about the mottled lady reaching over her shoulder and smiling. "Grinitch," says he with a knowing leer. But Vernabelle only says, yes, it was painted in the dear old village. Then the crowd sort of got together on the couch and in chairs and Vernabelle talked for one and all.
"If so," answered the bishop again, "it was her spirit, for I shrove her and have prayed over her open grave her spirit, which came to visit you from heaven, and has gone back to heaven now that you are of the earth again." Then Godwin remembered the truth, and groaning, fell asleep. Afterwards, as he grew stronger, Egbert told him all the story.
