A vestige of misgiving, a note of human anxiety, would have destroyed me. My peril was superlative, and yet as I look back on the occasion, I can see that it overdid comedy and became pure farce. I was defending my life with burlesque. My audience would not be impressed by finesse, and impressing it was a matter of life and death. In the words of the east-side bruiser, I was "makin' it strong."
Christmas in the East-Side tenements begins with the sunset on the "holy eve," except where the name is as a threat or a taunt. In a hundred such homes the whir of many sewing-machines, worked by the sweater's slaves with weary feet and aching backs, drowned every feeble note of joy that struggled to make itself heard above the noise of the great treadmill.
Marrineal, it appeared, did have an organization, of sorts; worse, he had gathered to him, by methods not peculiarly his own, the support of the lesser East-Side foreign language press, which may or may not have believed in his protestations of fealty to the Common People, but certainly did appreciate the liberality of his political advertising appropriation, advertising, in this sense, to be accorded its freest interpretation.
At that very instant the sentinel's cry rang out like a prophecy "Half-past one, and all's well!" Recovering quickly under the inspiring air, he dragged his body out of the hole and made a careful survey of the yard in which he found himself. He was under a shed, with a board fence between him and the east-side sentinels, and the gable end of Libby loomed grimly against the blue sky.
"You are sure you were not followed?" asked the detective, disregarding her lamentations with purposeful brusqueness, for the tears stood in her soft, bovine eyes, and he feared an emotional outburst which would draw down upon them the attention of the whole room. "Oh, no! I made sure of that. I rode uptown and half-way down again to be certain, and then changed to the east-side line."
He promptly bared his head and advanced to shake hands; but Aileen jerked hers behind her. "I'm Mr. Champney Googe, at your service. Who are you?" The little girl was sizing him up before she accepted the advance; Champney could tell by the "East-side" look with which she favored him. "I'm Miss Aileen Armagh, and don't yer forget it! at your service."
The latter swung clear of the bridge you will remember that the railing on the east-side was broken away out into space, and came down with a fearful crash, but right side up, on the steep north bank of the river just at the very moment when the horses reached the deep, loose snow beyond which at least gave them a secure footing.
"I don't know that he's just the sort of side-partner I'd go out of my way to choose, from what I've heard about him. Still, if one got mixed up with any of that East-Side crowd, he would be a mighty useful friend to have. I guess there's no harm done by getting him grateful." "Assuredly not," said Psmith. "We should not despise the humblest.
The prosperous pharmacist gleefully paid for his dinner and nimbly chased an East-side ferry-bound car. He laughed in spite of himself at Emil's unflagging deviltry. "He is a credit to Leah's Polish blood and my Austrian nurture," mused Braun. "The young wretch might be dangerous, too. He must know nothing of my deep game."
For an instant I was incapable of motion; then, as they stood in equal petrification, I remembered and acted on the counsel of an east-side gang member whom I had once been privileged to know in New York. I had inconsequently inquired whether, in his acrimonious career, he never came eye to eye with fear. "Sure thing," he had promptly replied, "but when a guy gets your goat stall.
