Another of these crystals, doubly terminated, measures 2½ inches by 11/12 of an inch, and is filled with large rhombohedral cavities, which formerly contained dolomite. The only crystal from this collection that has been cut into a gem was found in a pocket at a depth of over 43 feet. In color it is of a pleasing light green, and it weighs 4-22/32 carats.
What we deemed citadels, domes and parapets, prove to be the silvery dolomite only: limestone rock thrown into every conceivable form, the imposing masses blocking the horizon; the shadow of a mighty Babylon darkening the heaven; but a Babylon untenanted from its earliest beginning a phantom capital, an eldritch city, whose streets now for the first time echo with the sound of human voice and tread.
Below this, and partly in the bed of the stream, is another prodigious block of dolomite called La Sourde, and here the channel is so obstructed by the number and size of the rocks which have fallen into it, that the river has forced a passage beneath them, and does not reappear until the obstacle is passed. But although the water vanishes, its muffled groan arises from mysterious depths.
A limestone is found to contain 93.05% CaCO , and 5.16 % MgCO . Calculate the weight of CaO obtainable from 3 tons of the limestone, assuming complete conversion to oxide. What weight of Mg P O could be obtained from a 3-gram sample of the limestone? !Answers!: 1.565 tons; 0.2044 gram. A sample of dolomite is analyzed for calcium by precipitating as the oxalate and igniting the precipitate.
March through the mountains, which are of beautiful white and pink dolomite, scantily covered with upland trees and vegetation. The rain, as usual, made us halt early, and wild fruits helped to induce us to stay. In one place we lighted on a party of people living on Masuko fruit, and making mats of the Shuaré palm petioles.
March over well-wooded highlands with dolomite rocks cropping out and trees all covered with lichens, the watershed then changed to the south. 15th June, 1868. Found Moenempanda, Casembe's brother, on the Luluputa, a stream twenty yards wide and flowing west.
This, together with the monstrous masses of dolomite, wrinkled, white and honeycombed, the narrowness and gloomy depth of the gorge, the fury of the water as it descends amongst the blocks to leap into its gulf, makes the imagination ask if something supernatural has not happened here.
This book is the first serious attempt to describe the great barren tableland that extends to the south of Limousin in the Department of Aveyron, Lot, etc., a country of dolomite cliffs, and cañons, and subterranean rivers. The region is full of prehistoric and historic interest, relics of cave-dwellers, of mediaeval robbers, and of the English domination and the Hundred Years' War.
It effervesces much more slowly and feebly with acids than common limestone. In England this rock is generally of a yellowish colour; but it varies greatly in mineralogical character, passing from an earthy state to a white compact stone of great hardness. DOLOMITE, so common in many parts of Germany and France, is also a variety of magnesian limestone, usually of a granular texture.
The purest magnesian limestone consists of a double carbonate of calcium and magnesium, called dolomite." "But I have heard that magnesian lime is bad for soils," said Mr. Thornton. "That is true," Percy replied, "and so is ordinary lime bad for soils.
