It is difficult on those occasions to make the conflicting conclusions clear to everybody. Yet the system of prize distributions is time honoured and traditional, and every country is not yet so disinterested in study as to be able to do without it; under its sway a great deal of honest effort is put out, and the taste of success which is the great stimulant of youth is first experienced.
Only in the light of the contrastive perspective afforded by still more divergent languages, such as Basque and Finnish, will these vestigial resemblances receive their true historic value. I cannot but suspect that many of the more significant distributions of morphological similarities are to be explained as just such vestiges.
Men who had gone from the dry bones of Ames's Medulla and Wollebius to the "fresh springs" of Hooker and Bull and Pearson, must have found how utterly unlike to the Catholic Faith which they there were taught, were the "distributions and definitions" of that "theoretical divinity" in which they had been trained.
In reality, so far as my observations extend, these general distributions of the land are not more frequent than they were before. Of the various functions of the peasant self-government the judicial are perhaps the most frequently and the most severely criticised.
But, when we analyse his speculations, we find that his notion of power is, in the words of Bacon, "phantiastica et male terminata." To plough, he ranked only in the fourth place of profit and advantage. Tillage, indeed, in that part of ancient Italy which lay in the neighbour hood of Rome, must have been very much discouraged by the distributions of corn which were frequently made to the people, either gratuitously, or at a very low price.
During these distributions, which really benefitted no one, many women were always severely hurt, and some died from the blows they had received. Ali maintained several carriages for himself and his family, but allowed no one else to share in this prerogative.
Fiske asserts, the essential doctrine of Materialism i.e., the doctrine that what we know as Mind is an effect of certain collocations and distributions of what we know as Matter and Force that the argument might be employed with almost the same degree of effect, or absence of effect, to disprove any instance of recognised causation.
"The larger number of equine mammals now known from the tertiary deposits of this country, and their regular distributions through the subdivisions of this formation, afford a good opportunity to ascertain the probable descent of the modern horse.
