The ark was being made of pure levium, the wonderful new metal which, although already employed in the construction of aeroplanes and the framework of dirigible balloons, had not before been used for shipbuilding, except in the case of a few small boats, and these used only in the navy.

"Oh, well, you have to take chances in this business," observed Tom, with a smile. "Now, then, let's finish this work." The sand, falling from the ballast bags of the dirigible, had so effectually quenched the fire that it was soon cool enough to permit close approach. Koku, Tom and some of the men who best knew how to handle the explosives, were soon engaged in the work of salvage.

Tom had about decided on a small, but very powerful, dirigible balloon, that could be packed in a small compass and taken along. "This city may be in some mountain valley, and a balloon will be the only way we can get to it," he told Ned. "That's right," agreed his chum. "By the way, you haven't heard any more about Andy; have you?" "Not a thing. Haven't even seen him. None of us have."

The vessel was eventually taken over by the French Government and may be counted the first dirigible airship considered fit on its tests for military service. Later vessels of the Lebaudy type were the 'Patrie' and 'Republique, in which both size and method of construction surpassed those of the two first attempts.

As he spoke the dirigible was brought to the ground by her operators and as she touched the snow several of her crew gave a shout of surprise at the sight of the pile of treasure already excavated by the boys. They started to run toward it; but were checked by a sharp cry from their officer.

Wright accompanied his proffer by an appeal for a tremendous aviation force, "but," said he, "I strongly advise against spending any money whatsoever on dirigible balloons of any sort." Thereafter the progress of Count von Zeppelin was without interruption for any lack of financial strength.

The air glider was made as nearly perfect as any machine is, and in a fairly stiff gale, that blew up about a week later, Tom did some things in it that made his friends open their eyes. The young inventor had it under nearly as good control as he had his dirigible balloons or aeroplanes.

In 1872 Dupuy de Lome, commissioned by the French government, built a dirigible which he proposed to drive by man-power it was anticipated that the vessel would be of use in the siege of Paris, but it was not actually tested till after the conclusion of the war.

Consequently the German naval programme is to send the Zeppelin a certain distance ahead of the battleship squadron. The dirigible from its coign of vantage would be able to sight a hostile squadron if it were within visual range and would communicate the fact to the commander of the fleet below.

But these difficulties exist in two or three different fields, each of which is peculiarly complex and demands individual treatment. In the first place, there is the weight of the necessary installation. In the case of the dirigible this may be a secondary consideration, but with the aeroplane it is a matter of primary and vital importance.
