Whilst I have been preaching, who preach so rarely and so ill, the good cure has been soliciting the lord of the manor to step into the church, and give order what shall be done with his great-great-grandfather. And here we may bring in the 'stock'-dove, as being the 'stock' or stirps of the domestic kinds. Neither does this fact in the least invalidate our assertion. In such huts they dwell all the year round, flaying lambs or shearing sheep, living on bread, ricotta and water, very rarely tasting meat or wine and sleeping on shelves ranged round the hut, like berths in a ship's cabin. Varro himself wore a beard, as appears on the coin he struck during the war with the Pirates. It is reproduced in Smiths Dict. Gr. and Rom.

The street, retaining its warlike name, still exists a short street going off from Aldersgate Street at right angles on one side, and within a walk of not more than two or three minutes from the site of Milton's Aldersgate Street house.

Many will not need to be reminded how fine a poem in Longfellow's hands unfolds itself out of this word. Lastly let me note the pathos of poetry which lies often in the mere tracing of the succession of changes in meaning which certain words have undergone. Dict., and compare Pott, Etym. Forsch. i. 302.
