This divides the eye space into two separate compartments, which are filled with the so-called "humors" of the eye. The front cavity of the eyeball, which is again divided in part by the iris, is filled with the aqueous humor. This is a clear, lymph-like liquid which contains an occasional white corpuscle. It has a feeble motion and is slowly added to and withdrawn from the eye.
She bowed her head a moment in assent. She was determined he should seize her meaning fully. "A wave of spiritual awakening a descent of spiritual life upon a nation," she answered slowly, "forms itself a church, and the body of true believers are its sphere of action. They are literally its bodily expression. Each individual believer is a corpuscle in that Body.
Their nature may best be understood by means of a fanciful analogy. If we assume that all life is conscious life, as much aware of its environment as the freedom of movement of its life vehicle in that environment permits, a corpuscle vibrating in a solid would have a certain sense of space and of movement in space gained from its own experience.
The corpuscles of most mammals are smaller than those of man, but the size of a corpuscle is affected by various circumstances, such as drying or moisture, so that the medical witness is rarely justified in going farther than stating whether the stain is that of the blood of a mammal or not.
Let us now proceed to a consideration of the nature of the Universe, as a whole and in its parts. What is the Universe? But this will not satisfy the question, for we are sensible of the existence of the Universe. Let us examine this question. The claim of the corpuscle that: "I am Man!" would be modest in comparison. What else can it be of what else can it be made? This is the great question.
Nor are histologists agreed as to whether the red-blood corpuscles themselves are to be regarded as true cells, or merely as fragments of cells budded out from a true cell for a special purpose; but in either case there is not the slightest doubt that the chief function of the red corpuscle is to carry oxygen.
"Aren't you afraid?" "Of what?" serenely. "The men." "They know." "They know what?" "When and when not to speak. You have only to look resolute and proceed upon your way." Ah Cum lent an ear covertly. "How old are you?" demanded Miss Prudence. The spinsters offered a good example of how singular each human being is, despite the fact that in sisters the basic corpuscle is the same.
About this time "Scheming Jack" turns up asking for a small loan to perfect a promising scheme. The gracious brother replies that although his own expenses are more than a thousand pounds a year, he is glad to accommodate him, and hopes the scheme will prosper which of course he knew it would not, for success is a matter of red corpuscle.
Under sundry circumstances the corpuscle dies and becomes distended into a round mass, in the midst of which is seen a smaller spherical body, which existed, but was more or less hidden, in the living corpuscle, and is called its nucleus. Corpuscles of essentially similar structure are to be found in the skin, in the lining of the mouth, and scattered through the whole framework of the body.
A positively electrified body is one that has lost some of its corpuscles."*4* According to this view, then, electricity is not a form of energy but a form of matter; or, to be more precise, the electrical corpuscle is the fundamental structure out of which the atom of matter is built.
