But we have to remember always that the words as used by him come with a new volume of significance derived from his whole personality. Everything turns on the connotation which he gives to the term God that is central and pivotal. What this new Kingdom of God is, or will be, he does not attempt fully to explain or analyse.

"We are straying far from the subject in hand to adapt the words of our beloved Latin professor. Betty Wales was going to tell us how the 'Merry Hearts' could go out with a splurge." "I object to the president's English," interrupted Madeline. "The connotation of the term splurge is unpleasant. We don't wish to splurge. Now go ahead, Betty."

In any case, words are always in danger of losing part of their connotation.

From that time guilt was part of the connotation; and soon became the whole of it, since mankind were not prompted by any urgent motive to continue making a distinction in their language between bad men of servile station and bad men of any other rank in life.

Moreover, there is in the real American stories an amount of suggestiveness, a power of "connotation," which cannot be affirmed of those of any other country. A very large number of them are real contributions to sociology, and of considerable value too.

It is not only in the mode which has now been pointed out, namely by gradual inattention to a portion of the ideas conveyed, that words in common use are liable to shift their connotation.
