The Hare, and its very near congener, the Rabbit, are animals too well-known to need description; but it is necessary to say that, besides the species of both, peculiar to Great Britain, there are many other kinds in other parts of the world.
So much for llamas. Now the "guanaco." It is neither, but an animal of specific difference. It exists in a wild state in the high mountains, though, with great care and trouble, it can be domesticated and trained to carry burdens as well as its congener the llama. In form it resembles the latter, but, as is the case with most wild animals, the guanacos are all alike in colour.
Comparisons have been drawn between the terrapin and the turtle very absurdly; for, beyond the fact of both being testudines, there is not a point of resemblance. Individually, I prefer the tiny "diamond-back" to his gigantic congener, as more delicate and less cloying to the palate.
The magnificent meleagris, shining in metallic lustre, with spread wings and tail, offers a tempting aim to the hunter's rifle as it promises to afford him a rich repast; and the coq de prairie, and its gigantic congener the "sage grouse," whirr up at intervals along the path.
Thackeray, his disciple and congener, and Dickens, the congener of Smollett, do not so much treat of life as of the strata of society; the one studying nature from the club-room window, the other from the reporters' box in the police court.
In the United States and Canada, this animal has never been seen in a wild state. This is not strange. The grizzly bear has no affinity with the forest. Previous to the settling of these territories, they were all forest-covered. The grizzly is rarely found under heavy timber, like his congener the black bear; and, unlike the latter, he is not a tree-climber.
The argali, or mountain-sheep, with his huge curving horns, is seen there; and the shaggy wild goat bounds along the steepest cliffs. The black bear wanders through the wooded ravines; and his fiercer congener, the "grizzly" the most dreaded of all American animals drags his huge body along the rocky declivities. Having crossed the mountains, the fur countries extend westward to the Pacific.
There was the round solid hoof of the quagga, and his near congener the dauw; and there was the neat hoof-print of the gemsbok, and the larger track of the eland; and among these Von Bloom did not fail to notice the spoor of the dreaded lion. Although they had not heard his roaring that night, they had no doubt but there were plenty of his kind in that part of the country.
It usually breeds much further north. It has a strong, clear warble, which at once suggests the song of its congener. I have not been able to find any account of this particular species in the books, though it seems to be well known.
Is the ursus arctos of Europe confined to these limits? Are the bears of South America? the sloth bear of India and Ceylon? the bruang of Borneo? and his near congener, the bruang of Java and Sumatra? Why, these last are actually dwellers among palm-trees as the cocoa-planters know to their cost!
