If I say I remember A. B., the chance acquaintance of ten years ago, it is not because my idea of A. B. is very vivid on the contrary, it is extremely faint but because that idea is associated with ideas of impressions co-existent with those which I call A. B.; and that all these are at the end of the long series of ideas, which represent that much past time.
With regard to simple propositions, where the terms are understood, and the whole subject is comprehended at once, there is such an uniformity of sentiment among all human beings, that, for many ages, a very numerous set of notions were supposed to be innate, or necessarily co-existent with the faculty of reason: it being imagined, that universal agreement could proceed only from the invariable dictates of the universal parent.
Only 'most religious philosophers' can pretend to acknowledge the being of an infinite God co-existent with an infinite Universe. Universalists are frequently asked What moves matter? to which question nothing is the true and sufficient answer. Matter moves matter.
The relative absence of this quality will be marked by corresponding weakness, and although we may have a pronounced mental temperament, the individual will exhibit but little mental strength, and with a pronounced motive temperament he will be incapable of strong muscular action. Delicate Quality is denoted by delicacy and refinement of structure. It may or may not be co-existent with strength.
Whereby it appears that, to the measuring the duration of anything by time, it is not requisite that that thing should be co-existent to the motion we measure by, or any other periodical revolution; but it suffices to this purpose, that we have the idea of the length of ANY regular periodical appearances, which we can in our minds apply to duration, with which the motion or appearance never co-existed.
"Understand thou, therefore, that the city is this vain and deceitful world; that the citizens are the principalities and powers of the devils, the rulers of the darkness of this world, who entice us by the soft bait of pleasure, and counsel us to consider corruptible and perishable things as incorruptible, as though the enjoyment that cometh from them were co-existent with us, and immortal as we.
During meditation, however, one should not call up in the soul all the preparatory thoughts, but merely allow the life-like image to float before one’s mind and at the same time permit those feelings which are the result of these preparatory thoughts to vibrate with it. Thus the symbol becomes a sign, co-existent with the inner experience.
Now we have already observd, that however philosophers may distinguish betwixt the objects and perceptions of the senses; which they suppose co-existent and resembling; yet this is a distinction, which is not comprehended by the generality of mankind, who as they perceive only one being, can never assent to the opinion of a double existence and representation.
And the power to tax, it must be remembered, involves the power to destroy. This seems a long step from the theory of the men who founded the Republic. Nearly fifty years ago the Supreme Court stated the theory as follows: The states are, and they must ever be, co-existent with the National Government. Neither may destroy the other.
In the first case there is a total incapacity to perceive actual things correctly, and also to construct organically with the intelligence; in the second, the two things are co-existent as forms closely bound up one with the other.
