The boy grinned hysterically, a little frightened at Cissy's straightened brows and snapping eyes. "Get away! there's no answer." The boy ran off, and Cissy returned to the drawing-room. Then it occurred to her that the servant had not answered the bell. She rang again furiously. There was no response. She called down the basement staircase, and heard only the echo of her voice in the depths.

There was the straight Main Street with its new brick block of "stores," ending abruptly against a tangled bluff; there was the ruthless clearing in the sedate pines where the hideous spire of the new church imitated the soaring of the solemn shafts it had displaced with almost irreligious mockery. Yet this foreground was Cissy's world her life, her sole girlish experience.

"I'll not stop nowhere!" was Cissy's determination. Robert bade them good-bye with a smile, closed the door, and set off down the lane as fast as the darkness made it prudent. He did not think it wise to go through the village, so he made a detour by some fields, and came into the road again on the other side of Thorpe.

Cissy's death had removed the only cause he had for concealing his real identity. There was nothing more to prevent his revealing all to Miss Boutelle and to offer to adopt the boy. But he reflected this could not be done until after the funeral, for it was only due to Cissy's memory that he should still keep up the role of Dick Lasham as chief mourner.

Of course I wrote that I didn't want to see him, and I thought he was behaving very badly though I don't really think so, because it's all that idiot Cissy's fault. Didn't I do quite right? 'I think so. 'Very well. And now he's writing again, you see; oh, such a lot of rubbish! I can hear him saying it all through his nose. Do tell me what I ought to do next.

But Shiela recited very gravely: "Father's in Manhattan town, Hunting up our money; Philip's in the music-room, Calling Cis his honey; Cissy's sprinting through the hall, Trying to be funny " "I won't dance!" cried Cecile. But they sang insultingly: "Rock-a-by Cissy! Philip will slop! Cissy is angry, For Philip won't stop."

And now I am going to bed if everybody has had enough of Cissy's Bridge " "Me for the hay," observed Gray emphatically. So they all went up the stairway together, lingering a few moments on the landing to say good night. Cecile retired first, bewailing the humiliation of not having a maid of her own and requesting Shiela to send hers as she was too sleepy to undress.

'Now just let me tell you what I've thought, pursued the stout lady, hardly aware of this interruption. 'This'll have to be set right, both for Lou's sake and for yours, and to satisfy us all. They're making a mystery, d'you see, of Lou leaving 'ome and going off to live with strangers; and Cissy's been doing her best to make people think there's something wrong the spiteful creature!

The engineer had seemed to her to be a singularly attractive young man, yet she was equally impressed with Cissy's superior condition, which could find flaws in such perfection.

How can you say so, aunt? MRS. H. Wait a moment, Lucius. What grieved her was the giving in to Cissy's determination, seeing with her eyes, and not allowing herself to perceive that what she wished might not be good for her. L. Cissy always did domineer over mother.
